One of the top mid-majors in the country eyes an upset this evening, and we have a free college basketball pick for Albany’s trip to Louisville to battle the Cardinals.

To the untrained eye, Louisville’s Wednesday night matchup with Albany might look like a cake walk for the Cardinals. Those that have been keeping up this season, however, know the Great Danes are ranked No. 5 in the latest Mid-Majors Rankings at, and could spell trouble for a Louisville side that has struggled at times in the early going.

On an evening that finds several ranked teams from Power 6 conferences taking on smaller schools, this 9 PM (ET) tip at KFC Yum! Center on ESPNU has the potential to at least be more competitive. SBR’s top sports books certainly think so compared to the spreads Creighton, Duke, Seton Hall and North Carolina are expected to cover. Louisville is laying 14 in this one, a few shops listing 13½ with a total yet to be released.

Albany Top 50 In Free Throw Shooting

The mid-major poll released this week begins with Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s, a 69-54 winner over Dayton last night, plus a third West Coast Conference team in BYU. Towson follows before Albany finds its way to the list, down a notch from last week after splitting a pair of games with a loss at Memphis and home win vs. Canisius.

The loss to the Tigers was the only Great Danes game to make the betting board, and Albany couldn’t hold up its end of the bargain as a 1½ point underdog in the 67-58 setback. Will Brown’s club trailed by just a couple with 7 minutes to go before the Tigers used a quick 9-2 burst to pull away. The 21-for-61 shooting was by far the worst performance by Albany this season, as well as the 4-for-17 mark from 3-point range.

The Ville 27th According To KenPom

Louisville caught Memphis a few nights later at Madison Square Garden, and came away with its 4th-straight dubya, though the 81-72 decision wasn’t enough to cover a 12½ point spread on the NCAA basketball odds. The Cardinals blocked 14 would-be Tigers attempts, seven of those rejections by senior 7-footer Anas Mahmoud who owns a four-point-oh average, as in 4.0 blocks per game, good enough for fourth in the country.

Considering the off-court events that sent the Cardinals into the season on shaky ground, David Padgett has done a great job picking up the pieces as he prepares the Cards for their first-ever meeting with the Great Danes. Their only two losses came back-to-back a couple of weeks ago to strong Purdue and Seton Hall sides, and while I don’t expect a third tonight, I’m still willing to take the points for my free college basketball pick.
