Underappreciated GA Tech squares off with Virginia for this 7:00 ET tip at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.  It is the 3rd game of 4 in today’s Atlantic Coast Conference action.

GA Tech vs. Virginia 7:00 ET
When these teams met earlier this season, GA Tech defeated Virginia (68-64).  This sets up a viable revenge play on the 2nd seeded Cavs, who will not look past GA Tech to either a revenge meeting with Miami or a rematch against the hottest team in the league, VA Tech.

Georgia Tech
Coaching to save his job the entire season, 5th year GA Tech HC, Brian Gregory, “engineered” his Yellow Jackets to a 19-13 SU season.  This included an emotionally draining OT win last night against Clemson to reach this spot in the Quarter Finals.  But, “Donkey Round” winners from last night against well-rested, superior opponents, especially ones playing with revenge, fare poorly the next day.  Such will be the case for Tech, as they look to slow down the momentum of this Virginia team.

After a (64-61) loss at Miami halted the 8-1 SU momentum of Virginia, the Cavs finished the season strong on a 3-0 SU ATS run vs. N. Carolina, Clemson and Louisville.  The run was keyed by a sub 60 point defense which is now arguably the best in the nation once again.  As coached by 7th year HC Bennett, the Cavs employ a “pack-line defense.”  This means that if they are not threatened from the perimeter, they “pack” all defenders into the paint to prevent drives to the basket.

Once the ball swings to behind the arc, they respond quickly to challenge all 3 point shooters.  This is a renamed revision of the “amoeba” matchup defense that was originated in Pittsburgh, nearly 40 years ago, led the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels to national prominence in the early ‘90s, and has since morphed to today’s version known as the “pack-line.”  Led by the strong guard play of veterans Brogdon and Perrantes, Virginia is set to challenge for the CCT Title.  The previous defeat to GA Tech, along with the Jackets’ Donkey Game win last night, sets up a strong situation against the well-rested, avenging team who is seeded 1st or 2nd in the conference.

Final Analysis
Now playing with the best defense in the league, the coaching of Bennett, great guard play, with revenge against an unrested team off an upset win creates the perfect storm for this blow-out winner with Virginia tonight.  I invite you to put the NCAA Basketball odds in your favor and join me in my NCAA Basketball pick on Virginia tonight.
