Our expert college basketball capper takes a look at the SMU/Memphis showdown that will happen tonight. Join us in this preview article and see who's our pick and why.

SMU (-1-) vs. Memphis 9:00 ET ESPN2
At 9:00 ET on Thursday, SMU brings their American Athletic Conference league leading mark of 22-5 SU, 13-2 SU in conference action to the FedEx Forum, where they will meet a Memphis team, whose record is 17-10 SU, 9-5 SU in AAC play. When these teams met earlier this season, SMU emerged with a comfortable (73-59) victory.

Technical handicappers will shudder at the thought of fading this Memphis team in this role. For, at their FedEx Forum home, the Tigers are 62-10 SU L4Y, including 12-4 SU this season. In addition, it is a highly profitable, 2nd meet revenge situation to favor avenging home teams at a competitive price, when each team enters off multiple wins and covers as is the case tonight. With (F) Austin Nicholls returning from injury, Memphis has won and covered 3 straight games. But, a closer inspection of the Memphis log indicates fundamental deficiencies. Against the top 3 teams in the league, they have lost by 14 to SMU, 18 to Tulsa and 1, on this court, to Temple, which should give you some ideas when looking over the NCAA basketball odds. In addition, there is an 8 point home loss to Tulane on this court.  Issues revolve around a graduated backcourt from last year. The Tigers have still not replaced the experienced parts. One of their greatest problems this evening will be on the bench, where 6th year head man, Josh Pastnor, will be badly outcoached by wily veteran Larry Brown.

As expected, SMU has made gigantic strides under the experienced Brown. Prior to his arrival, the Mustangs won just 13 games. Last year, SMU went 27-10 SU.  This year, they are already 22-5 SU. SMU has beaten every team in the league, except Cincinnati, whose physical style won out in both contests. No such issue tonight, as interior forces, Kennedy and Moreira, who combined for 36/10 in the earlier series victory, will again control the interior. SMU is both a qualified Roadrunner and Defensive Dandy, allowing just 59 PPG, 38% from the field and 32% from the arc, along with a total margin of 9.6 in rebounding, assist/TOs and TO margin.  It has resulted in a 7-3 SU away record, qualifying them as a Roadrunner (a group of teams who beginning this week were 90-35 ATS away to -5-). Ponies prance at this price! Note that last 6 conference road games for SMU have all been victories of 5 or more points, which makes them a solid college basketball pick.
