Wake Forest and Georgia Tech are small underdogs today against Syracuse and Boston College, respectively, in first-round ACC Tournament games. Can the underdogs pull minor upsets?

These teams split their two previous matchups this season, each winning at home by single digits. Syracuse was made a -4 favorite on tonight's college basketball odds board, but with my NCAAB picks I will take Wake Forest plus the points. Although the Demon Deacons have had a really bad season and not played nearly up to their potential, this is a good spot for them to salvage their season. Wake Forest has been very competitive, losing a lot of games by single digits, including four of their past five losses. Syracuse hasn’t been much better in the ACC this year, and they have lost four of their past six. This game will come down to Wake Forest's ability to score against the Syracuse zone, and I think they can. The Demon Deacons have been good from beyond the arc, shooting at a nice 38.2-percent clip, and a respectable 44.2 percent overall. Having had faced Syracuse twice this season, they will know what to expect attacking the zone defense, and I think they'll take this game to the wire.

In their only matchup this season Boston College took care of business, beating Georgia Tech 80-72 at home. For today's rematch BC was made a small -2 favorite on the college basketball odds board, but for my NCAAB pick I will take Georgia Tech plus the small number to possibly win this opening game of the ACC Tournament. Boston College has had an excellent turnaround season and has played some really good basketball on both ends of the floor -- especially offensively, shooting 45.2 percent overall and 36.7 percent from distance. The issue for them today, however, is the fact Georgia Tech has been an extremely slow-tempo team with an emphasis on defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 42.7 percent, but more importantly allowing opponents to get up just 55.8 attempts per game. Despite the fact Boston College has been solid at times, I think they will struggle today because of the pace. Boston College is definitely a team that looks to have a bright future, but there is a reason they are favored by only a bucket. Look for this game to be a grind and for Georgia Tech to pull the minor upset.
