When placing your NCAA Basketball picks, there’s not a lot of value in betting on 5/4 (Duke) and 9/5 (Virginia) chalks to win three games in a row in as many days, although they’re the most logical choices. Considering that both Duke and Virginia would pretty much secure a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament by advancing to the ACC Tournament Final, there’s that much more of a motivational factor for each team.
Virginia went 16-2 in conference play this season, one of those losses came at the hands of Duke, and the other by two points in their regular season finale at Louisville. The Cavaliers are definitely the most difficult team to play against in the ACC, if not the entire nation based on their suffocating defensive play, and their efficient half court offensive sets.
Duke was 15-3 in ACC action with losses suffered at the hands of Miami Fla., North Carolina State, and Notre Dame. Based on losses in conference play, and who each of the two favorites were defeated by, Duke would seem to be the most vulnerable in terms of being upset prior to the ACC title game.
Discounting the two prohibitive favorites, there are two teams that intrigue me at their current odds. Notre Dame at 13/2 and North Carolina State with odds of 25/1 provide the best values regarding your college basketball picks with a realistic chance to capture the ACC crown.
They say the great equalizer for a college basketball underdog is the three-point shot. Well if that indeed is the case, Notre Dame is an extremely live underdog in this ACC Tourney. “The Fighting Irish” are converting on an exceptional 39% of their three-point attempts this season. They’re also the second best team in the country in offensive field percentage at 51%. Notre Dame split their two games with Duke, and led Virginia up until the final three minutes of a loss in South Bend.
The North Carolina State Wolfpack enters the conference tournament having won five of their last six games. Three of those five wins came versus quality opponents in North Carolina on the road, at Louisville, and Syracuse. They also defeated Duke 87-75 in early January. Although they’ve displayed the ability of beating anyone in the ACC, they’ve also suffered bad losses at the hands of Boston College and Wake Forest who combined to go 9-27 in the ACC standings. All in all, at 25/1 NCAA basketball odds, they’re worth a calculated risk with a small wager.
Best of the Rest
North Carolina (13/2): The only thing that makes me shy away from the Tar Heels is the fact that they went 0-3 versus the conference tournament favorites (Duke/Virginia), and two of those defeats came on their home floor.
Louisville (13/2): The Cardinals can beat anybody in the ACC on any given day, but they lack the quality depth to pull off multiple wins on consecutive days versus top caliber opposition.
