The ACC Big Ten challenge is always one of the best showcases in college basketball and today we will look at Syracuse versus Maryland.  The Orangemen have been rolling so far this season so I am a bit surprised they are favored by just a point.  Can Maryland come in and pull the small upset.

Maryland at Syracuse

Odds makers have come out making Syracuse a -1 favorite in this matchup, but for my NCAA basketball pick, I will back Maryland to come in and win this game straight up. The Terrapins are solid this year and should be able to score against the zone.

I am a fan of Mark Turgeon and this Maryland team has some potential to pull some upsets in the Big Ten. Of course the loss of Melo Trimble is big but there is some experience back and so far this team has been very good on the defensive end. On the season the Terps are allowing opponents to shoot just 36.1% from the field and 39.1% on their two-point shots. They have also been good in defending from beyond the arc allowing just 30.4% shooting from distance. What puts me on them tonight though is that I believe they are the better offensive team compared to Syracuse as they are currently shooting 51.4% overall and 59.9% from the interior extended ranking them 20th and 15th in the country respectively. Turgeon is a veteran coach and knows how to score against a zone.

Syracuse has been one of the more surprising teams this season coming into this contest undefeated. Like Maryland, they have been extremely good defensively allowing opponents just 31.5% on their two-point shots and 33.9% on opponents overall shooting ranking them second and third in the country respectively. However, I believe this has a bit to do with the fact they have not had very tough competition so far this season and have played every game at home. Offensively they have been just subpar shooting just 45% from the floor which ranks them in the middle of all college teams. Of course, they are at home for this contest but Maryland will be the best offensive team they have faced so far this year and I don’t like how Jim Boeheim’s club matches up in this particular spot. On both sides of the ball, Syracuse will struggle some tonight against a polished Maryland team.
