  South Carolina vs. Duke

East Region, Sunday, 8:40 pm E.T

Game# 719-720

South Carolina will look to spring a huge upset of #2 seed Duke on Sunday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina. At the time of this writing, March Madness odds are displaying Duke as a 7.5-point favorite across the board, and there’s a total of either 141.5 or 142.0.

Historical Win and Home Court Flavor for Gamecocks

Despite being the lower seeded team, South Carolina will have the luxury of playing its second straight NCAA Tournament game just 103 miles from its campus in Columbia, South Carolina. Considering the excitement generated from their first NCAA Tournament win in 44 years, and the storied basketball program (Duke) which they’ll be facing, there’s surely going to be a large contingent of South Carolina fans making the 90-minute ride to Greenville for Sunday’s contest. South Carolina will be seeking its first NCAA Tournament “Sweet 16” appearance since 1971. Putting South Carolina’s drought into proper perspective, Duke will be seeking a ‘Sweet 16” appearance for the 24th time since 1986.

Blue Devils on Fire

Duke followed its 4 wins in 4-days performance at the ACC tournament with a dominating 2017 March Madness debut. The Blue Devils trounced Troy on Friday evening 87-65. Besides their current 5-game win streak, Duke covered on each of those occasions. During that stretch, Duke has shot a sizzling hot 49.0% from the field, converted on an excellent 40.4% of their 3-point attempts, and made a stellar 76.9% of its free throws. From a defensive standpoint, Duke allowed its opponents to average just 10 assists while forcing 18 turnovers per game in that precise time frame.

Final Analysis and Pick

Duke has scored 75 points or more in 6 straight games. The Blue Devils are a perfect 6-0 SU&ATS this season (+17.9 PPG) after scoring 75 or more in 4 consecutive games.

Despite their win on Friday, South Carolina has gone a less than inspiring 4-6 straight up in their previous 10 games and were a terrible 2-9 ATS over its last 11 contests. It’s also worth noting, South Carolina shot a superb 52.2% against Marquette in their NCAA Tournament opener. Don’t be fooled by that sizzling hot shooting night. After all, it was just the 3rd time in their last 29 games that South Carolina had shot 50% or better. Besides that, it came against one of the poorest statistical defensive teams in this NCAA Tournament field.

Duke’s rich history and big game experience will be too much for South Carolina to overcompensate for. I’m going to use the favorite as one of my March Madness predictions.
