The Kentucky Wildcats got their season started on Friday night but they failed to cover the spread. They won 78-65 against Albany, but can they do any better against NJIT on Saturday?

Momentum
Kentucky’s new-look team got the party started against Albany on Friday but they probably disappointed a lot of public bettors. They were a 20-point favorite by close and you can rest assured that the public was all of Kentucky, expecting a romp. However, that never transpired. They ended up pulling out a 13-point win. Sharp money was on the dog in that spot as they understand that Kentucky will be a work in progress. Are they talented? Absolutely. However, they have six freshmen on the roster and this is a different team than the one that was 38-0 last year. The good news is that they shot a healthy 56% from the field on Friday, outrebounded Albany 34-28 and looked very comfortable playing together. The main issue from yesterday was the turnovers: they had 20 of them. If they can cut those down, they probably cover the spread.

NJIT will serve as another cupcake matchup for Kentucky but this is a team that’s coming off a very successful seasons (by their standards). They managed to finish 21-12 last year, which was their best record since joining Division I in 2006. They even had a signature win too as they stunned No. 17 Michigan in Ann Arbour last December. Their season ended with a trip to the CIT where they reached the semifinals. They were an Independent last season but now they’re heading into their first season in the Atlantic Sun.

Home-Away Trends
Kentucky was an incredible home team last season as they won all 19 of their affairs at Rupp Arena. This was a team that produced about as dominant a regular season as we’ve seen in years as remember they didn’t lose a game at home or on the road until the Final Four (against Wisconsin). That home-court advantage should be a big factor tonight.

As for NJIT, they would much rather be at home. They were 14-2 on their home court last season compared to 6-10 on the road. That translates to a mere 37.5% winning percentage when they don’t have their home audience behind them.

What’s The Pick?
Handicapping game this game puts you in the same position that you were last night. Yes, Kentucky is expected to win but will they cover the NCAA Basketball odds. It’s a big number and we know they’re talented enough to do it but will they play well enough? I’m going to go with ‘yes’ for my NCAA Basketball picks. Head Coach John Calipari tore into his team last night about the fact that they had 20 turnovers. Chances are that if they don’t make so many mistakes with the ball, they end up winning big(ger) and covering the spread. They’ll be more careful on Saturday and still dominate. Take them minutes the points.
