The Sun will try to protect their Eastern Conference-best record when they play host to the Sky this evening. How are the WNBA odds shaping up for tonight's game in Connecticut?
Despite the Sun having an outstanding start to their season, they've been classified as underdogs for tonight's home game against the visiting Sky.
If we glance through the WNBA odds offerings, we see Chicago favored by 3.5 points at almost all of the top sportsbooks, including BetOnline. Meanwhile, we see a pretty high total of 157 on the board, which isn't too surprising considering the level of success each of these teams have had offensively this season.
The Sun opened up the season with a loss at home versus Washington, but then they went on a tear, piling up seven consecutive victories. They weren't able to sustain that winning streak a couple nights ago, however, as they fell by eight at home to Indiana. Connecticut is now 7-2 on the season, which puts them in first place in the Eastern Conference.
It was a rough defensive showing from the Sun against the Fever, as they allowed 92 points. It was blowout city, and a fourth quarter run kept the final score a lot more reasonable than what it should have been. All five Connecticut starters scored in double figures, with Kelsey Bone scoring a team-high 21 points, but the bench provided little to nothing in the defeat.
Bone, Alex Bentley and Alyssa Thomas have been the leading contributors so far this season. Bentley is averaging 16.2 points per game, while Bone has been good for 14.9 points and 6.3 rebounds a contest. Thomas has averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game heading into tonight's home battle with the Sky.
Hoping to avoid a third straight loss, the Sky will try to get the better of the Sun. They fell short in a 89-81 loss against New York two nights ago, as they shot 39.4 percent overall, 26.3 percent from beyond the arc and 87.0 percent from the charity stripe. The big problems came defensively, with Chicago letting the Liberty shoot 45.5 percent from the floor.
Individually, Elena Delle Donne had yet another phenomenal all-around game. She finished with 26 points on 8-of-20 shooting and hauled in 13 rebounds as well; she also blocked two shots. Elsewhere, Cappie Pondexter scored 19 points, while Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigly both hit double figures too.
Delle Donne is obviously the player to watch and will be playing an instrumental part if Chicago's able to secure a win this evening. She's averaged 28.7 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest and now will get a crack at dominating the Sun once again; she posted 27 points in the first meeting of the season.
We're again inclined to roll with the favorites in this situation. The Sun may be playing a little over their heads at the moment, and WNBA odds makers think they could be in for a reality check against the Sky tonight.
We believe there's merit to that line of thinking, as Chicago is going to be raring to go after two very disappointing back-to-back results. Despite those recent setbacks, the Sky remain the league's most potent offensive team, and they've also been terrific on the glass, ranking third in the WNBA in rebounds per game. That's not good news for a Sun squad that's 11th in the league in that same department.
What it boils down to here is we're expecting Chicago to avoid a third straight loss in spite of being on the road. For your WNBA picks, look for the Sky, led by an unstoppable Delle Donne, to win by at least four and therefore covering the WNBA betting odds here this evening.
