Houston Rockets vs. Indiana Pacers (-1) 7:05 ET NBA TV
As a backdrop to this contest, note that Western Conference teams are 249-175 SU (58.7%) when facing their Eastern Conference brethren. More specifically, Houston stands 20-6 SU when facing off against Eastern Conference foes, while Indiana is just 8-18 SU against teams from the West. In addition, while Indiana is just 18-17 SU at home, Houston is a solid 20-13 SU on the road. Those are a nice basis from which to work in a game where our team is a small underdog in NBA Odds.
With the news that Indiana superstar, Paul George, would return before the playoffs and that PG George Hill had returned to the lineup from injury, Indiana made a pointspread run that spanned the All-Star break that was 12-2 SU ATS. Mysteriously, since whipping Orlando (118-86), the Pacers have gone 1-5 SU, 0-6 ATS. The Pacers’ upward surge was a function of great defense that allowed less than 100 points in 10/11 games. During their recent dive, however, they have allowed an amazing 106 PPG. That is very much out of character for a team who allows just 96.8 PPG, the lowest number in the Eastern Conference. The recent slide has dropped them a ½ game behind Charlotte for the No. 8 playoff spot, as no fewer than 6 teams are duking it out for the final 2 playoff spots in the East. But, if Indiana is to turn around their fortunes, it will have to come against an equally motivated Houston team.
The Rockets have battled through the loss of Dwight Howard, behind the MVP type season of James Harden. Through March 20th, the Rockets were on a 10-4 SU, 9-5 ATS surge. A 117-109 loss to Phoenix on Saturday night as 8 point home favorite leaves them with a 46-23 SU record. Every victory is critical for Houston, who is currently in 3rd place in the West. Though they are just 2 games behind Memphis for the 2nd spot, they are also just 2 games ahead of San Antonio for the 6th spot. History from this season implies a positive performance for Houston. For, the Rockets are 16-6 ATS (73%) following a loss this NBA season. Percentage wise that is easily the best record in the NBA this season! First meeting of the year between these two saw Houston prevail by a 110-98 margin as double digit favorite on their home court.
I see no reason why Houston cannot duplicate that previous victory margin! The Rockets are in a strong bounce back spot following a loss, playing an Indiana team who has lost their way. With the strong technical edges of the inverted home/road dichotomy and West vs. East dominance, the Rockets are clearly the side worthy of NBA picks in this contest.
