Today, the Pacers face Mavs for the first time this season. NBA odds have Indiana as a small favorite, but with Dallas playing well themselves, should we give the points for our NBA pick?

NBA Odds Overview
The NBA odds board has Indiana as a -3.5 -110 favorite like at BetOnline. For me, though, this puts some good value on taking a good Dallas team that should take this game to the wire or possibly win. These teams matchup really well, making this one of the better games of the day. For my NBA pick of the day, I'm going to back Dallas plus the points.

Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks are averaging 101.6 points per game while shooting 44.2% from the field, and allowing 100.6 points per game on 43.9% shooting from the field. It seems that this team has surprised a lot of people this season, but it is not too surprising when you have a really good basketball coach like Rick Carlisle. Although they haven't been great in their last several games on the road, they have won their last two away from Dallas prior to their recent home stand. Dirk Nowitzki is having another stellar year and point guard Deron Williams has surprised a lot of people who were doubting him prior to this season. Offensively, for the most part, they rank as one of the better teams in the league and average 49.7% in their two point shooting which ranks eighth in the NBA. From distance, they have been less than stellar at just 32.8% per game, but overall they have been decently efficient. On the defensive side of the ball, they have been solid both inside and out allowing just 39 points in the paint per game which ranks seventh in the NBA, and allowing opponents just 33% shooting beyond the arc. They have also been good at limiting pace to other teams, something that will have to focus on tonight against Indiana's new look small ball.

Indiana Pacers
Indiana is averaging 103.6 points per game while shooting 44.4% from the field, and allowing 99.4 points per game on 44% shooting from the field. For the most part, although they have changed their identity, they are still a very tough team on the defensive end. They rank in the middle part or better in the league on the defensive side of the ball in some of the more important defensive statistics like opponent three point shooting percentage, and opponent efficiency. They have also been very solid at limiting extra passes, ranking 20th in the NBA in opponent assist per game. With Paul George leading the way, this Indiana offense has looked nothing like they did last year. They are an efficient group that will try to push the pace on teams shooting the ball from outside the paint at a pretty good rate. They are shooting the three extremely well at 38.9% per game which ranks second in the league. This is just a completely different team from last year and a lot more fun to watch.

I'm a big fan of both of these coaches, but for your NBA pick today, I recommend backing Dallas plus the points. Although I expect Indiana to continue firing away from distance and pushing the pace, Dallas is the type of team that can hang right with them. Expect this game to go down to the wire where grabbing the points will be essential.
