We partially broke our slump on Saturday’s big slate of games with a split pair of NBA Picks. Too bad the Pelicans couldn’t play some defense in the second half or it would have been a perfect night. With the short slate on Sunday, let’s bounce into a couple of winners to start off the new week right.

The big question mark between the Bulls and Heat today is whether or not Hassan Whiteside is going to play. He hasn’t looked like himself most of the season, and against the hapless Bulls, there’s a chance the Heat hold him out, which could really change the NBA Odds for this one.

Heat vs. Bulls

If Whiteside misses this game, the Heat are going to be missing their key rim protector. Against any other team that would probably be a problem, but against Chicago, it likely just means they are going to give up a few more baskets at the rim.

However, it also hurts their defensive value as well. The Bulls have been atrocious offensively this season, and they might look just a tad better if Whiteside ends up missing this one. Chicago is scoring just 89.5 points per game at home this season, and with the slower paced Heat coming in, I don’t expect them to score much more than that this afternoon, even if Whiteside sits out.

The Miami big man has had a day off since his last game, but for me the early start time is where the value should come into play in this one.

NBA players don’t like playing in the daytime. We see it all the time in this league. Matinee games tend to be sloppier and lower scoring, and on the road in this one, the Heat are likely going to fall into that trap regardless if they have their big man or not.

Miami is averaging just 100 points per game on the road this season, and on the year their offensive rating of 104 ranks 25th in the NBA. With the potential absence of their best player, the Heat would not only lose out on his defense, but his pick and roll offense as well. Combined with the earlier start and that’s enough for me to recommend the under.

Without Mike Conley for at least another week, the Grizzlies might struggle to score some against certain teams. However, the Nets are not one of those teams. Brooklyn is going to try and speed this game up as much as possible, and if the Grizzlies oblige, we could see a higher scoring game that most Grizzlies games.

Nets vs. Grizzlies

Last season when these two teams got together, the over cashed in both as the two teams got into up and down games against one another. That could happen again tonight, especially without Mike Conley

The Grizzlies’ halfcourt offense has really been hurt playing without their floor general, and even though Mario Chalmers and Tyreke Evans have done a great job filling in, they are both better playing in the open floor rather than the halfcourt.

If the Grizzlies play a little faster against this Nets team, I think they’ll still win it, but they also might give up a few more points.

Memphis has not been scoring much lately at home, but against a defense that is allowing more than 110 points per 100 possessions this season, they could finally break out of their slump.

However, a better play might be the first half total of 100 ½. Memphis has not been bad at scoring in the first halves recently, and with the Nets trying to speed them up as much as possible, I see 101 or more being scored.
