For tonight's free NBA picks we preview the matchup between the Detroit Pistons and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Detroit Pistons vs. Minnesota Timberwolves
Each of the 1st two days of the NBA Season, I have provided double winners in this very spot.  Tuesday night you cashed with the Rockets and UNDER in their 108-90 throttling of the outmanned Lakers.  Last night, it was Bulls and UNDER as Chicago, the far more cohesive team, easily outpaced the Knicks in the 2nd half.  Tonight’s double play winner is Minnesota (-4-) and OVER 206-.

SVG (Stan Van Gundy) takes the reigns as coach of the Detroit Pistons this season.  Detroit has struggled mightily the last two years with identical 29-53 marks.  There is cause to believe there will be minor improvement in Motown.  But last night’s lethargic 79 points at the Mile High altitude of Denver may belie that fact.  Missing for consecutive evenings on Thursday will be the Pistons primary inside threat Greg Monroe serving the 2nd of his 2 game season-opening suspension.  Last night, Detroit connected on only 37% of their shots including 6/26 from behind the arc.  Tonight, however, they play the more permissive defense of Minnesota who will allow more scoring and a faster paced game.

Last night, the Wolves lost 105-101 to a good Memphis team.  Though they did not get the victory, they came inside the 8 point number.  Tonight, following that defeat, they return home to face a beatable Detroit team.  I make that statement knowing that the Timberwolves have won 8 straight times over Detroit.  Despite the loss in the off season of their best player, Kevin Love, Minnesota held a 47-33 rebounding edge over a strong bounding Memphis team.  Newly acquired Thaddeus Young led the way with 26 points.  The bench had a positive 46-10 scoring edge against the Grizz.  That is clearly a positive as the Wolves play on consecutive nights.  Lone negative for Minnesota, and in no small part the reason for their defeat, was 23 turnovers.  The Minnesota Timberwolves have a core group of excellent offensive players.  Number 1 draft pick, Andrew Wiggins, joins last year’s pick, Bennett, and this year’s selection, Lavine, for top scoring offensive talent.  Pekovic patrols the paint.  With PG Rubio taking better care of the ball and shooting guard K. Mart scheduled to return from an ankle injury, this looks to be a solid offensive team.

Loss of Monroe, a big blow to Detroit on defense and the boards! Wolves have a deep and explosive offensive team which should have a big advantage returning from Memphis off a defeat for their home opener.  For your free NBA picks take the Wolves and OVER for your double winner tonight!
