It’s the first NBA Picks of the New Year, and with a healthy slate of NBA Odds tonight, I have found two picks that look like tremendous value. We have been on a nice hot streak over the last few weeks, so let’s see if we can carry over our 2014 success into 2015.

Rockets vs. Pelicans
The Pelicans have been on a roll ATS even though they haven’t been great SU, but tonight they have a tough matchup tonight against the Rockets. The NBA Odds have the Rockets as -1 ½ road favorites here, with a total of 202 points, and even though the Pelicans have gone 11-3 ATS in their last 14 games, I think Houston has a chance to win this game and cover.

The Rockets’ defense has been much better since Dwight Howard has returned to the lineup, and with the Pelicans’ struggles on defense this season, I sincerely doubt they have enough to slow down Howard or even more so, James Harden. Harden has been on an MVP level tear recently, and with only Tyreke Evans to guard him, another 30-point for Harden might be in the cards.

That being said, the Rockets are the play here. They are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games as road favorites, despite being only 3-3 ATS in that area this season, I think you have to look at that trend favorably. The Pelicans on the other hand are only 7-18-1 ATS as a home dog in the last couple of seasons, and while they have been good ATS this season, they aren’t good enough to best the Rockets here, even at home.

Sixers vs. Suns
Philadelphia has another tough road game against a Western team tonight, as they head into Phoenix to play the Suns. The NBA Odds have the Suns as -14 favorites in this game, which is of course the highest spread of the evening. However with the spread so high, it’s likely a line we have to lay off of tonight. Although I trust the Suns to win this game, I do not trust them to cover.

However the total has twice the value as the spread, and at 209 ½, the over looks like a tremendous value. The Sixers’ defensive troubles have been well documented, but the Suns’ defense isn’t much better. Phoenix has been getting beat by opposing big men all season, and tonight against Nerlens Noel, the young Philly big man is going to be an issue on the offensive glass. While Philadelphia doesn’t have the scorers to keep up with the Suns, as long as they get into the mid to upper 90s tonight, the over is the play.

The Suns have cashed the over in their last five games in a row, and the over is 4-1 in their last five games overall as favorites. For Philadelphia, the over is 5-2 in their last seven games as an underdog of +11 or higher, and on two days rest, the over is 50-22-1 in their last 73 games. This season, the Sixers have cashed the over at 4-1-1 in their last six games against teams with winning records, and I see it going down once again tonight against a talented offensive team in Phoenix. Take the over as your NBA picks.
