🏀 Timberwolves vs. Thunder preview

📈 Game 1 trends

  • Oklahoma City is the NBA's best ATS team (57-33-4) after covering the spread in an absurd 63.3% of the team's games.
  • Edwards has gone Under 25.5 points at a 60% clip over the last 10 games. He's also failed to score 26-plus points in three of four games against Oklahoma City this season.
  • Gobert has failed to record double-digit points in eight of Minnesota's 10 postseason contests, going Under 8.5 at a 60% rate, even against inferior paint defenders.
  • Dort tallied a steal in four of seven games against Denver, and the Timberwolves turn the ball over a similar amount per game.
  • Caruso has made two-plus 3-pointers in four of his last five postseason outings.

🧐 Game 1 analysis

Minnesota and Oklahoma City split their season series at two apiece, but we believe the latter holds the advantage in this contest, as we highlighted in our Western Conference Finals preview.

The Thunder boast better underlying numbers across the board, except for 3-point percentage. They'll be the best offensive and defensive team the Timberwolves will have faced in the postseason. Oklahoma City is coming off a third 30-plus-point victory this postseason. The rest of the original field has logged five combined.

Oklahoma City's suffocating defense will key in on the stars of Minnesota's offense, similar to how it swarmed Nikola Jokic last round. That could result in Edwards' scoring numbers declining. We already believe his Over/Under is set too high in Game 1.

The same goes for Gobert, who doesn't possess a clear size advantage in the paint during this series against Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein. The chaos the Thunder's defense causes translates to turnovers, which is where opportunities arise for Dort's contributions and Caruso's open looks in transition.

We expect Oklahoma City to be riding the high of a dominant win over Denver as it gets the job done easily in front of a raucous home crowd at Paycom Center in Game 1.
