It makes sense that oddsmakers have made the Timberwolves a small favorite over Washington, not to say that Wizards hasn’t been hot as well playing some tremendous basketball since January. Is there any value in backing the home favorites?

Washington Wizards

Washington has won five games in a row after escaping Portland in overtime a couple days ago. However, I think the best play is to fade them because this recent winning streak is nothing to be too excited about considering it was against some of the lower tier teams in the league. With all due respect to Washington, who has been playing really well over the past couple of months, I like how Minnesota matches up with them in this spot. On the season Washington has really pushed some tempo which was to be expected under Scott Brooks averaging 87 attempts per game and knocking down 41.4 of those good for second in the league. As well, across the board, they rank in the top five in most offensive statistics.

The issue for me tonight is the other side of the ball where they have definitely struggled statistically. Currently, Washington ranks 21st, 22nd, and 23rd in the NBA in opponent overall shooting percentage, opponent two-point shooting percentage, and opponent effective field-goal percentage respectively. I expect they will be able to score, but at the same time, I think they will have difficulty stopping Minnesota.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Like Washington, Minnesota has been playing some really good basketball recently going 5-3 since the All-Star break including a big home win versus Golden State. This is a really young and talented team under head coach Tom Thibodeau, and it seems to me they are starting to hit their stride. Offensively they rank in the middle of the league are better in most statistics highlighted by shooting 46.5% from the field which ranks eighth in the NBA.

Defensively they have been less than stellar statistically but they have been good defending beyond the arc allowing opponents to shoot just 35.8% from distance. That will be a key point of contention tonight as Washington has been very efficient from range this season. I simply like the way this team is playing right now so I have no trouble backing them at home versus just about anybody in the league. Expect Minnesota to get another win tonight.

Washington Wizards vs Minnesota Timberwolves

Despite being one of the hottest teams in the NBA, if not the hottest, Washington has been made a +1 underdog in this spot. For my NBA pick, I will fade them and back Minnesota minus the point and look for them to win this game by more than five.
