Washington Mystics vs. Connecticut Sun
The Sun, despite winning only two of their first seven games, will come in favored in the WNBA odds over the Mystics.
Connecticut looked good in their most recent victory, topping Atlanta 85-75 at home. It was their second victory of the season, with their first coming almost two weeks ago versus Seattle.
It was no surprise to see Chiney Ogwumike leading the way once again – she had 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and added 10 rebounds in the winning effort over the Dream. Allison Hightower, Kelsey Bone and Renee Montgomery all scored in double figures as well,.
Now the Sun will try to build off that victory and find enough firepower to get the better of the Mystics, who have started out 3-2 in 2014.
The Mystics have been off since last weekend's thrilling 92-84 triple-overtime win over the Sparks. Ivory Latta hit only 4-of-17 from the field but finished with 14 points, eight assists and six rebounds nonetheless.
What makes Washington stand out is their incredible amount of depth. They have nine players who all each average at least 16.6 minutes of action per game and that bench was the deciding factor in the Mystics' victory over the Sparks. They scored 63 of the 92 points in the win.
That strength in numbers is a big reason why we like Washington to notch their third straight win. We think they'll top a Connecticut team that relies too much on Ogwumike's stellar play, so we'll back balance in this WNBA battle this evening.
Pick: Mystics +1.5
San Antonio Stars vs. New York Liberty
Though the Liberty haven't been anywhere near their best lately, they'll be getting the favorites tag for this home encounter with the Stars.
New York is 2-4 SU and 3-3 ATS on the season, with San Antonio checks in at 3-4 SU and 2-4 against the spread. For tonight, the Liberty are favored by 3.5 points, while the total has been bet down to as low as 147.5
The Liberty will be aiming to rebound after consecutive road losses to Washington (60-68) and Indiana (66-70). They've now dropped four of their last five.
Tina Charles was dominant despite her team losing, pouring in 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting and grabbing 14 rebounds in 30 minutes of action. However, Anna Cruz (10 points) was the only other member of the Liberty to score in double figures, with the team shooting 43.1 percent overall. Cappie Pondexter hit only 1-of-10 shots for seven points.
It should be easier for Pondexter and the rest of New York to find their stride offensively against a Stars squad that's struggled on the defensive end this season. San Antonio has lost three of four, losing twice to Minnesota and on the road to Los Angeles.
Coming in, the Stars are ranked ninth in the WNBA in scoring offense (75.4 PPG) and have been even worse defensively, allowing 80.9 PPG thus far, putting them 11th in the league in that category. They've also struggled on the glass, not a good sign when Charles is lined up on the other side.
Tonight we think New York is worth the play. We expect Charles to dominate inside and Pondexter to bounce back after a poor game over the weekend. Take the Liberty to win by four or more with your WNBA picks.
Pick: Liberty -3.5
