The NBA season kicked off yesterday but on today’s .card we have a full slate of games. We’re going to focus on a few of the matchups looking at the totals to see if there is any value

 Charlotte at Detroit

There is more expected from both of these teams this season and these two coaches know each other very well with Steve Clifford having worked under Stan Van Gundy. The new look Charlotte Hornets, highlighted by acquiring Dwight Howard should be an interesting mix this season with some good perimeter play and interior defense. Detroit is expected to be one of the better defensive teams in the league and I particularly like their pickup of Avery Bradley. Oddsmakers have come out with an interesting total of 204 and for my NBA pick, in this matchup, I’m going to back under the total. Although Detroit really pushed tempo last year averaging 88 attempts per game I expect for the familiarity of these coaches to come in to play and for the defenses to get enough stops.

 Miami at Orlando

Miami really surprised some teams last year being much more competitive than most pundits probably anticipated. They return their core of players and will get back Justise Winslow from injury who is still a little bit under the radar. The defensive foundation should still be there and I expect for them to once again surprise a lot of teams in the East. Orlando still remains one of the youngest teams in the NBA and head coach Frank Vogel has his work cut out for him. I’m not really sure about the direction of this team but I’m a fan of Vogel so I expect for them to play hard on both ends of the floor. Oddsmakers have come out with a total of 207 but that line is already dropped to 205.5 and for my NBA pick, I will take under the total. Although in their last three matchups last season they went over this number I don’t expect the pace combined with their overall shooting percentage to get there tonight.

Portland at Phoenix

Not a whole lot has changed for either of these teams so we can expect quite the up-and-down affair when these two matchup in Phoenix. With a lack of strong interior play, we can expect the Suns to go at the fast pace that we are used to over this past decade and Devin Booker should continue to flourish as a go-to scorer. Portland under Terry Stotts has no problem going at a quick pace as well with their tremendous backcourt and outside shooting. Last season versus Phoenix every game was an up-tempo affair and I just don’t see that changing tonight with all the regular players back. Oddsmakers have come out with a really high 220 for this matchup but look for the tempo to be there and for the shots to drop so for my NBA pick I will back the over.
