A month into the NBA season is enough of a sample size to properly evaluate this teams based on the eye test and the metrics.  Let’s take a look at some of the slated action for Friday night and see if we can mine through some data and make us some money.

Pistons vs Wizards

The Wizards and Pistons are on different trajectories after their October 20th meeting in which the Wizards won 115-11 in D.C.

The Detroit Pistons have gotten off to one of their hotter starts in recent memory by amassing a 14-6 record. One of the catalysts for the hot start is Andre Drummond and his newfound urgency to pick up his intensity on the defensive end.

Another key to Detroit’s resurgence as a relevant team in the East is the health of point guard Reggie Jackson. Last season Jackson struggled with a lack of explosiveness due to a lingering ankle injury, but this season it seems he has regained the athleticism that made him a promising prospect just a few seasons ago.

The Wizards have lost five of their last six games and are struggling to find an identity with John Wall out of action. Bradley Beal is looking to make his first All-Star game this season, but still lacks some of the ancillary skills that superstar players need to have in order to lead their teams to victory. If the Wizards want to win, they have to do a much better job of including Otto Porter in the game plan and allowing him to get to his spots within the offense.

Golden State Warriors vs Orlando Magic

If you like 3-pointers than this is the NBA game to watch tonight. Everyone knows about the shooting prowess of the Golden State Warriors, who are second in the league in 3-point shooting percentage with 39.6% per contest. Right behind them are the Orlando Magic who shoot 39.6% this season, up from shooting 32.8% last season which ranked 29th in the league. It’s not as of the Magic went out and added a bunch of 3-pointer shooters, they kind of developed their players internally starting with Aaron Gordon.

Gordon leads the NBA in 3-point shooting, nailing 55% of his shots from behind the arc. The San Francisco area native will make his return to his hometown being known for much more than a powerful dunker this time around.

Look for the Magic to use their weapons from deep to stay competitive in this game and to cover the 10.5 point spread.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs Oklahoma City Thunder

Jimmy Butler has settled any debate about the hierarchy in the Minnesota offense. Butler has settled in as an ancillary option in Minnesota, and allowed the young stars, Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns dominate the ball on offense. Butler is fifth among Wolves player in usage rate at 19.7%, which means that he is getting the ball much less than he did last season in Chicago. What Butler is doing is establishing himself as the defensive stopper and glue guy that the Wolves have been missing.

The Thunder on the other hand have three offensive weapons who thrive better in isolation situations. Oklahoma City isn’t nearly as good at shooting the basketball as the Warriors either, so that also hurts. The Thunder rank 21st in the NBA in the 3-point shooting, by only knocking down 35% of their threes.

The Thunder do play defense and have the second four ranked scoring defense in the NBA, only giving up 98.6 points per game.

Things are turning sour in OKC at a rapid pace, making tonight’s game almost a must win situation for them. Look for Westbrook to lead his team to victory tonight.
