The Timberwolves travel to Denver on Thursday night after a blowout loss to the Jazz, while the Nuggets have won three straight and are desperately trying to cop a playoff spot.

The Timberwolves were in first place in the Northwest Division and gunning for their first playoff appearance in 14 years when their resident superstar went down on Feb 23. Since that time, the T-Wolves have gone 8-8 straight up and 6-10 against the all-important number. In their last outing on Sunday, the Wolves were blown out 121-97 by the surging Utah Jazz as three-point home dogs.

The Denver Nuggets are currently on the outside looking in on the Western Conference playoff picture. But with four games remaining in their regular season, just two games stand between them and the No. 4 seed in the conference. But at this point, the Nuggets would be content to get their ticket punched to the postseason as even the No. 8 seed, which is jointly occupied by their opponents tonight and the New Orleans Pelicans. The Nuggets are on a three-game winning streak with overtime victories against the Thunder and Bucks while winning in regulation in their last game against the Pacers.

Many will take a quick look at the NBA odds and see that Denver is a fairly substantial home favorite against a team in which they dropped both previous meetings against this season. Although that is true, it should also be noted that the Timberwolves received vital contributions from Butler in both those contests. Butler scored 25 points in Minnesota’s 112-104 win over Denver in their first meeting Dec. 20 and then donned his Superman cape in their second meeting just a week later when he scored 39 points in the Wolves’ 128-125 home victory. But neither Butler nor his offensive heroics will be available for tonight’s game against a Nuggets’ team that needs every win it can find.

One last item that should not be overlooked is the emergence of Denver center Nikola Jokic, averaging 25.1 points and over 11 boards per game in his past 10. His contributions will be key as he will be tasked with limiting the talented Karl-Anthony Towns. Swallow hard and don’t let the five-point spread prevent you from backing the Nuggets in your NBA picks tonight. They are rolling, while the Wolves are flailing. It’s a revenge spot for Denver and a game they desperately need. Back the home chalk tonight.
