The Lakers have been one of the league's worst teams, and we find it hard to believe they'll keep it close against the upstart Grizzlies, even on their home court. What do NBA oddsmakers have to say about this matchup?
Most sportsbooks have the Grizzlies favored by 6.5 points against the Lakers, but there are a few out there that have a spread of seven available.
Whenever LA is involved, you know points are going to be scored. It's only a matter of how high the final total will be. Right now, the O/U on NBA odds is at 202 points.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers continue to underwhelm, as they're now 3-11 on the season. Two of their three wins have come on the road, with their one home victory at the Staples Center coming over the Bobcats.
LA didn't have a great weekend here recently. They got thumped by 36 in Dallas on Friday and then lost at home to Denver in overtime on Sunday. The Nuggets have been playing better basketball here of late, but it's still more than concerning that the Lakers have won just one time on their home court this entire season.
Considering how high the total was coming in, it was a little surprising to see the low-scoring final. Both teams struggled to find their rhythm, with the Lakers shooting 37.1 percent and the Nuggets checking in at 37.8 percent.
Kobe Bryant had 27 points, six rebounds and four assists, with Jordan Hill posting 11 points and 14 rebounds and Jeremy Lin tossing in a 17/5/3 line. Wesley Johnson had one of his better games of the season, logging seven points, 12 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and two steals.
Alas, the Lakers couldn't make enough plays down the stretch and therefore suffered yet another defeat. They're 30th in the NBA in points allowed (a staggering 111.6 points per contest), and they haven't been nearly efficient enough offensively to make up for it. Simply put: it's been a mess.
While the Lakers are floundering, the Grizzlies continue to kill it. They're at 12-2 on the season, with their two losses coming at the hands of the Bucks and Raptors on the road. Memphis has still yet to lose at home.
The Grizzlies just wrapped up one of their most impressive victories of the season, as they took care of the Clippers in a 107-91 win.
Memphis completely owned LA inside, outrebounding the road team 52-32 and outscoring them 52-32 in points in the paint. Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph had their way, as usual, combining for 40 points and 20 rebounds, though it was Gasol (30 points and 12 boards) that inflicted most of the damage to DeAndre Jordan and company.
As a team, the Grizzlies shot 49.4 percent from the field. Courtney Lee, Tony Allen, Beno Udrih and Quincy Pondexter all scored in double figures as well, which made up for a quiet night out of point guard Mike Conley, who finished with just seven points and seven assists in 27 minutes.
This is a team that's clicking in every imaginable way right now, and Memphis will have to love their chances of grabbing a third straight win in LA this evening.
Right now, we just can't trust the Lakers whatsoever with our NBA picks. Their defense has been nothing short of atrocious, and this is a team that seems content with losing, just so long as Kobe is getting his each and every night.
On the other hand, the Grizzlies have given us every reason to have faith, as they're playing sound basketball, especially on the defensive end, where they rank third in points allowed per game. This is a team that has built up a lot of chemistry, so we don't anticipate them having much trouble outplaying the Lakers, who are all over the place.
For Wednesday night's busy slate, we're opting to back Memphis as the road chalk.
