The Chicago Bulls have struggled ATS this season when laying 3 or more points, which is their line against the Celtics tonight.  Can we look past that trend and side our NBA picks with CHI tonight?

The Bulls have been terrible favorites all year.  They’re just 2-9 ATS when laying three points or more, including an 0-fer at the United Center; their lone cover as chalk coming in a six point win as one point favorites over Oklahoma City.  In their first 18 games, the Bulls have won by more than six points only three times, significant money burners for their supporters.

Meanwhile, the Celtics are a team that has consistently played their best basketball on the highway, both this year and last.  We saw this team win SU as road underdogs at Houston and Oklahoma City on back-2-back nights last month.  They just closed out a road trip by winning three of their last four, the lone loss coming in spread covering fashion by only three points at San Antonio.

Celtics low post behemoth Jared Sullinger, talking about Boston’s mentality on the highway: “We love ’em, because we’re around each other even more and get to pick each other’s brains, and see what each other sees out there on the floor. We have a lot of fun.”’

The markets have seen Chicago struggle repeatedly as the favorite.  The NBA Odds markets have seen Boston do their best work as road underdogs.  The result of those ATS success and failures – in very different roles than we see both teams in tonight – have left the Celtics laying too high of a pointspread price here, especially given the circumstances surrounding these two squads.

Boston is fat and happy coming off that very successful road trip.  Chicago is on the other end of the motivational spectrum after blowing back-2-back fourth quarter leads in home losses to the Suns and Hornets while allowing those two squads to hang a combined 72 points on them in the final stanza.  All Star guard Jimmy Butler: “"I don't know what it is.  Can't close teams out; have a lead, don't finish, lose games ... We keep talking about it, yadda, yadda, yadda, but eventually we're going to have to fix it or we're going to keep finding ourselves on the losing end of ball games."

In general, I think there’s more money to be made betting ON the Celtics and AGAINST the Bulls than the other way around.  But the Bulls haven’t lost three in a row all year.  They’ve won SU as underdogs against the Spurs and Suns.  Boston is 0-2 SU and ATS returning home off a SU road win and they are 0-fer the season ATS in their first game back home off a multi-game road trip.  Look for ESPN to get what they want here – a tight, down to the wire game that gets decided in the final minute – which puts me on the Bulls as underdogs with my NBA Pick.

Take Chicago.
