By the Numbers is a daily NBA column featuring Swinger’s top selections according to historical trends and game-time matchups. Let’s review the top picks for Tuesday.

Timberwolves (28-44 SU, 32-40 ATS) At Pacers (37-36 SU, 33-39-1 ATS)
  • Indiana is 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games.
  • Indiana is 34-16-2 ATS in their last 52 games as a home favorite of 0.5-4.5.
  • Minnesota is 0-5 ATS in their last five games following a straight up loss.
  • Minnesota is 0-6 ATS in their last six after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.
  • Minnesota is 1-4 ATS in their last five Tuesday games.
  • Minnesota is 0-5 ATS in their last five games following a ATS loss.
  • Minnesota is 0-6 ATS in their last six road games.
  • Minnesota is 0-4 ATS in their last four road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

As the numbers suggest – OK, scream – this is more of a fade of the Minnesota Timberwolves than an endorsement of the Indiana Pacers. The T-Wolves are in the midst of a shame spiral, having not only lost their last six but failing to cover the NBA odds in each and every one. Indiana captured the only meeting between the clubs this season with a 109-103 victory as 3-point road pups on January 26. It should be noted that the Pacers will be without the services of role player Al Jefferson and perhaps Rodney Stuckey, but big guns Paul George, Myles Turner and Jeff Teague will be suited up and vying to stay in contention for the postseason while the Wolves prepare for their vacation destinations.

Heat (35-38 SU, 45-28 ATS) At Pistons (34-40 SU, 34-40 ATS)
  • Detroit is 1-5 ATS in their last six games following a straight up loss.
  • Detroit is 1-7 ATS in their last eight games as an underdog of 0.5-4.5.
  • Detroit is 1-5 ATS in their last six games following an ATS loss.
  • Detroit is 1-8 ATS in their last nine games playing on zero days’ rest.
  • Miami is 6-0 ATS in their last six games following a straight up loss.
  • Miami is 14-2-1 ATS in their last 17 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.
  • Miami is 10-4 ATS in their last 14 Tuesday games.
  • Miami is 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

Believe it or not, the Miami Heat have vaulted into the playoff picture courtesy of a blistering 24-8 straight up mark and cashing at a ridiculous 82 percent for all those backing them in their NBA picks during this streak dating to mid-January. Both these teams are vying for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff seed, but the Pistons have dropped and failed to cover seven of their last eight. Let’s look for a repeat of their last matchup when the Heat burned the Pistons 116-103 as 3-point home dogs back in January.
