Philadelphia Sixers

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 4:27 PM GMT

By the Numbers is a daily NBA column featuring Swinger’s top selections according to historical trends and game time matchups. Let’s review the top picks for Wednesday evening and cash in our NBA picks.

Pacers (29-26 SU, 25-29-1 ATS) vs. Cavaliers (38-16 SU, 25-27-2 ATS)

  • Cleveland is 1-6 ATS in their last seven games when their starting five players combine for more than 160 minutes of the previous day.

  • Cleveland is Cavaliers are 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 when their opponent allows 100 points or more in their previous game.

  • Cleveland is 0-4 ATS in their last four games playing on zero day’s rest.

  • Indiana is 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.

  • Indiana is 4-0 ATS in their last four road games.

  • Indiana is 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games playing on one day’s rest.

  • Indiana is 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.

The Pacers will be without power forward Thaddeus Young tonight as he is sidelined with a wrist injury but more importantly, the Cavaliers will have to get used to life without All-Star Kevin Love for the next six weeks. Although I backed Cleveland in my NBA picks last night I am turning the tables and fading them tonight against a streaky Indiana team that rises to the level of their competition and is 3-1 ATS versus the Cavs over the last four meetings.

76’ers (21-34 SU, 33-21-1 ATS) vs. Celtics (36-19 SU, 29-24-2 ATS)

  • Boston is 1-5 ATS in their last six games as a favorite.

  • Boston is 0-4 ATS in their last four home games vs. a team with a road winning percentage of less than .400.

  • Boston is 0-4 ATS in their last four home games.

  • Boston is 1-5 ATS in their last six games as a home favorite of 5.0-10.5.

  • Philadelphia is 4-1 ATS in their last five Wednesday games.

  • Philadelphia is 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a straight up win.

  • Philadelphia is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 when their opponent scores 100 points or more in their previous game.

  • Philadelphia is 10-4 ATS in their last 14 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.

The reason the NBA odds makers are giving the Sixers such a generous head start is three-fold. First, the Celtics are playing well, having won 10 of their last 11 but take note that the Green is only 6-5 ATS over those 11 contests. Second, Philly center Joel Embiid is still out nursing a bone bruise on his knee as well as a slight meniscus tear of which Sixers management is being rightfully cautious. Lastly, Jahlil Okafor has been relegated to civvies over the last pair of games due to trade rumors which have yet to culminate.

Okafor may be back tonight as he did make the trip to Boston. I will also state that Nerlens Noel has been underrated since stepping in for Embiid and in six starts this season the former sixth overall pick in the 2013 draft out of Kentucky has posted 14.2 PPG, 7.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.7 blocked shots in an average of 27 minutes per game. And yes, the Sixers have covered the number in both meetings against the Celtics this season.
