By the Numbers is a daily NBA column featuring Swinger’s top selections according to historical trends and game time matchups. Let’s review the top picks for Friday evening and cash in our NBA picks.

Grizzlies (34-24 SU, 30-28 ATS) vs. Pacers (29-28 SU, 25-31-1 ATS)
  • Indiana is 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games following a straight up loss.

  • Indiana is 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

  • Indiana is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.

  • Memphis is 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a straight up loss.

  • Memphis is 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.

  • Memphis is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.

This will be the first of two meetings between the clubs this season but if we look at how these teams fared against each other last season we can clearly see that Memphis had no issues walking through the Pacers and covering the NBA odds in both contests. In addition, the Pacers may have a power outage at power forward with Thaddeus Young continuing to be plagued with a wrist injury while his backup Lavoy Allen is also questionable to go with his lingering knee injury. Thus, the immortal Kevin Seraphin will be forced to do all the heavy lifting for Indiana which means advantage - Memphis.

Suns (18-39 SU, 28-27-2 ATS) vs. Bulls (28-29 SU, 29-29 ATS)
  • Chicago is 8-20 ATS in their last 28 Friday games.

  • Chicago is 5-13 ATS in their last 18 games as a favorite.

  • Chicago is 4-10 ATS in their last 14 home games vs. a team with a road winning percentage of less than .400.

  • Chicago is 6-15 ATS in their last 21 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.

  • Phoenix is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Friday games.

  • Phoenix is 6-2 ATS in their last eight games as an underdog of 5.0-10.5.

  • Phoenix is 7-1 ATS in their last eight games after scoring more than 125 points in their previous game.

Though we like to take a purely analytical and statistical approach to our NBA picks, it would be derelict to ignore the emotional impact of trading the team’s locker room leader Taj Gibson to Oklahoma at the trade deadline yesterday. In addition, these teams have met just once this season and that resulted in a dominating 115-97 Suns’ victory over the Bulls in the desert. Phoenix ended the break on a high-note with a 137-101 dismantling of the Lakers and is poised to cover and even upset the disheartened Bulls in this one.
