The Golden State Warriors are starting to look like the NBA champions that many predicted they would be. Today they have an interesting challenge on the second leg of a back to back. Have odds makers given Detroit too many points?

Golden State Warriors

Golden State is averaging 117.4 points per game while shooting 49.6% from the floor both of which rank first in the NBA. I’m actually a little bit surprised they’re not a bigger favorite in this spot but it does make a little bit of sense when we start to look at Detroit’s numbers and the fact that Golden State is playing their second game in two nights. What has impressed me about the Warriors recently is their propensity to play better defense. This is how they won the championship two years ago by not only being a great scoring team but being very efficient on the defensive end. Currently, Golden State is allowing opponents just 32.2% from beyond the arc which ranks first in the NBA. They also rank second in opponent effective field-goal percentage and shooting efficiency. I don’t need to get into all of their offensive numbers insomuch to say that they are the best offensive team in the league, by far. All that being said and how great this team is with Detroit coming off some rest, and not playing very well recently, I look for them to give the Warriors all they want tonight at the Palace.

Detroit Pistons

Detroit has lost four games in a row by over a double-digit average which makes them being under a plus double-digit underdog a little bit surprising against the league’s best team. If Detroit is going to bounce back at all this would be the spot to do it and I believe Stan Van Gundy will have his team primed to play their best game over the past couple weeks. They simply have not been sharp recently but defensively they still rank among one of the best teams in the league ranking fifth and eighth in opponent shooting efficiency and effective field-goal percentage. They also have been excellent in allowing opponents just eight three-pointers per game which ranks second in the NBA. Of course, this is a different monster they are facing tonight in Golden State and they’re going to have to score but their shooting percentages across the board not that great. Currently, Detroit is just shooting 44.8% from the field which ranks right in the middle of the NBA. However, with the way Golden State likes to get up and down the floor I believe Detroit’s going to get a lot of opportunities to put up quite a few points at home and stay within the number.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers have made Detroit a +6.5 underdog at several places. This makes this a 'numbers play' for me because it doesn’t really make a lot of sense considering how poorly they been playing recently. Oddsmakers don’t give away free money though so for my NBA pick, I will back Detroit plus the points.
