For Monday’s NBA action we are going ahead to New Orleans and Portland where the Pelicans host Atlanta, and the Trailblazers take on their Western Conference rival the Denver Nuggets. There have been a lot of high totals so far this season, so is that what we will see today in these contests?

Atlanta at New Orleans total 217.5

Although these two teams come from different conferences what really has me surprised about this line set by odds makers is the fact it is the largest we have seen between these two with statistics going back to 2003. Although top sportsbooks have come out with a big 217.5 for my NBA pick I’m going to back over the total in this matchup. Just talking about the number is quite interesting considering their last three matchups odds makers have set the total under 210 and they have gone under in all those games. This season though is different and both teams cannot only score but can really push some tempo. Currently Atlanta is shooting 38.4% from distance which ranks sixth in the NBA, but what I like most is the fact that they are allowing opponents to get up 87.2 attempts per game which is a really fast clip. On the other side New Orleans has been efficient and currently are shooting 46.8% from the floor ranking them ninth, and like Atlanta, they are allowing opponents to get up and down the floor allowing 88.7 attempts per game ranking them 23rd in the league. The number on this game is quite big for reason, so look for these two to get up and down the floor and score plenty of points.

Denver at Portland total 209

This line has actually dropped since opening at 211 and there is good reason for that considering the tendencies of these two teams this season. What has me perplexed on this number set by NBA odds-makers is that it is actually lower than what we have seen the last four times Denver and Portland have matched up. On top of that is the fact that they have gone over these higher totals in each of those contests. That being said though this is a completely different dynamic this season with these two teams as currently Portland is allowing opponents just 100.7 points per game which ranks sixth in the NBA, and Denver has not been getting up and down the floor as much as we are used to. Although Denver has been good in their efficiency for the most part Portland has been one of the better defensive teams in the league and rank second, fourth, and fifth in the NBA in opponent shooting efficiency, opponent three-point shooting percentage, and opponent field goals made per game. This aspect should be the difference tonight as a Trailblazers being at home have been very focused on defense this season. This line is moving fast, many books are already at 210.5.
