Washington Mystics vs. New York Liberty
The Liberty hope to stop the bleeding this afternoon when they entertain the Mystics inside the Prudential Center.
New York has lost three straight and is now at 2-5 SU and 3-4 ATS on the season. Washington checks in at 4-3 both straight up and against the spread, having won three of their last four with victories over Connecticut, Los Angeles and this same Liberty team almost two weeks ago.
It's been a busy week for the Mystics, as they faced off against the Sun on Thursday and then had to play Indiana (losing 61-64 at home) the next night. They've had one day of rest ahead of today's meeting.
As for the Liberty, they've been off since Thursday's 12-point home loss to San Antonio. The defensive effort just wasn't there, as New York allowed 87 points to the Stars, tied for the most they've surrendered all season long.
However, though they've dropped three straight, we're still going right back to the Liberty with our WNBA picks.
With this being Washington's third game in four nights, we question whether or not they'll be able to have enough energy to keep up with a desperate New York team tonight.
The Liberty are reeling right now and could really use a pick-me-up in the form of a win on their home floor. We expect them to show up with a good defensive effort – they're currently tanked second in the WNBA, allowing only 72.7 points per game – and ride Tina Charless en route to a win and cover.
WNBA Pick: Liberty -3.5
Minnesota Lynx vs. Los Angeles Sparks
The Sparks shook off an injury to Candace Parker to spank the Sky in Chicago two nights ago in a 102-88 road win.
It was a much-needed win, as Los Angeles had looked shaky prior in consecutive road setbacks to Washington and then Atlanta. Four different members of the Sparks scored at least 14 points, with the team hitting at a 55.8 percent clip overall.
One thing's for sure: Los Angeles will have to be similarly efficient offensively this afternoon if they want to keep pace with the Lynx, who have been the WNBA's most prolific team so far in 2014.
Minnesota, however, picked up their first loss of the season on Friday, falling by three on the road to Seattle. The Lynx shot 41.7 percent overall, with Maya Moore and Seimone Augustus having to settle for a combined 24 points.
It was a far cry from the team that's averaged 84.0 points per game this season. Minnesota had scored at least 75 points in all seven of their opening wins, but couldn't get into a rhythm against the Storm.
Today we expect more luck on the offensive end for the Lynx, though we still believe the Sparks are the better play with our sports picks. In what should be a high-scoring contest, Los Angeles should prevail here, but that's only if Candace Parker (21.3 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 5.3 APG) is good to go and not too limited.
Overall, the Sparks are one of the few teams in the league that have the weapons to stay toe-to-toe with the Lynx, so we'll add the home team at these shorts odds. The OVER is also worth strong consideration.
WNBA Pick: Sparks -3.5 (and lean OVER)
