The San Antonio Spurs (53-10) travel to Target Center to visit the Minnesota Timberwolves (20-44). The Spurs are favored by 10.5 points on the NBA odds board. What's the right NBA pick for this contest?

San Antonio Spurs (-10.5) vs. Minnesota Timberwolves
San Antonio HC Gregg Popovich did not play one minute for the Spurs last night.  Nor did he coach the team!  And, he won’t be on the sidelines again tonight, as he remains at home tending to a family medical emergency. In his place, Asst. Coach Ettore Messina coached the Spurs in what was arguably their worst performance of the season on the offensive end.  Tonight, San Antonio travels to Minnesota following their (99-91) loss at Indiana.  This game is slotted for an 8:05 ET start, as seen on NBA TV.  The T-Wolves return home from their game at Charlotte last night, a 108-103 road loss.

At 20-44 SU, locked into 13th place in the Western Conference playoff queue, it is obvious the T-Wolves are going nowhere this season.  Their 11-21 SU home record is better than only the LA Lakers in the West.  Clearly, the T-Wolves are in rebuilding mode.  There is light at the end of the tunnel, however, if one examines the box score from last night.  The Wolves have 3 young performers, who can lead them to the winning side of the ledger.  Last night, Towns had a 28/14 night, Wiggins scored 25 and Rubio scored 10 points, while dishing out 10 assists.  But, they are a long way from the experience and performance of the years in which the Spurs had a Big 3 of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili.  Main issue is on the defensive end, where the Wolves have allowed 15 consecutive opponents to score more than 100 points.  In that timeframe, they are allowing 115 PPG on 50% shooting.  That is exactly what the Spurs’ offense needs, after turning in their worst performance of the season.

We certainly cannot blame the absence of HC Popovich for the Spurs’ worst offensive game of the season.  Hoisting up their most shots of the season, the Spurs connected on only 34 of 96 attempts for just 35%.  They also made only 4 of 28 three pointers in last night’s (99-91) loss at Indiana.  There were no excuses for the Spurs, as they had a full roster available for the game.  Even without Popovich on the sidelines tonight, look for a huge bounce back effort by San Antonio.  The Spurs are 7-2 ATS following a loss this season and are 33-20 ATS unrested.  Even though they failed in this role last night, the Spurs remain 32-17 ATS as a favorite of 7 or more points, including 13-7 ATS as road chalk in that price range.

I invite you to put the NBA odds in your favor and join me with my NBA pick on the San Antonio Spurs tonight.
