The Sunday slate of games is full of intriguing matchups to bet on. We have you covered for the New Orleans Pelicans against the San Antonio Spurs. Will the upstart Pels be able to cover after showing well in recent games? Or will they fall short again in the restart?

San Antonio Spurs vs. New Orleans Pelicans

Sunday, August 09, 2020 – 03:00 PM EDT at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida

New Orleans Pelicans

One of the most fun teams in the restart has to be the Pelicans. They've stayed entertaining even as Zion Williamson sits games thanks to a deep bench that's emerged. Unknowns like Frank Jackson and Nicolo Melli were solid contributors against the Wizards even as stars Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball struggled to score.

The Pelicans have lost three of five thus far though because of the latter issue. While they're a much more interesting play as the favorite in this matchup if Williamson plays as expected, there are reasons why they've lost their last three to the Spurs despite being an athletic team. They lack the discipline and consistency needed to overcome a deeper Spurs roster.

Covering the spread can be a sign for how well they're playing to expectations, but that appears off for the Pels considering Zion was hurt for so long and where expectations were when he was out. Their play has been uninspiring since the restart, with only one loss within 15 points, and two wins over struggling teams.

They have trouble guarding multi-guard offenses like the Spurs, ranking 27th in defense and middling as a shooting defense. This is a terrible matchup for them.

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs have been even worse on defense but rank as one of the most balanced offenses as they've established themselves as efficient as anyone across the board. They're a clean cog as usual thanks to Lonnie Walker, Derrick White, and Dejounte Murray's presence. Their frontcourt with Rudy Gay and Jakob Poeltl has been similarly key to their offensive dominance.

Online sportsbooks have been off with the Spurs' lines quite often but they tend to take care of business against younger competition. As an underdog, they're more likely to at least make this a one possession game, which is why we're avoiding the money line and going with the spread.

I like their ability to threaten the lack of backcourt talent in New Orleans, as I didn't even mention DeMar Derozan yet.
