After splitting a pair of NBA picks last night, I am back once again for Saturday’s nice slate of NBA action. With seven different games this evening, including one earlier start.

Wizards vs. Pistons
Last night 22 teams were in action and one of them was the Pistons, and despite looking up and down at times this season, when they are playing well they look like a playoff team. It was on display last night as they took care of Minnesota on the road. Now they are back home tonight to welcome in a Wizards team that has at times looked really good, and other times really bad this season. The NBA odds have Washington as a +2 ½ underdog despite the fact they are rested tonight and the Pistons played last night, and the total comes in at 202½.

Washington figured something out last game, and I think against this Pistons team, they will have to continue it. Last season in the playoffs, the Wizards went small and played Paul Pierce and Otto Porter at the two forward positions, and it was one of the reasons they had success. However, other than the second half of their last game against the Bucks, the Wizards have played two bigs a lot, all while playing at the fastest pace in the league. It was killing their defense, and their offense looked average at best.

However, they blew out the Bucks the other night by playing small in the second half, and I would not be surprised to see them do it again tonight against the Pistons. Forcing Ersan Ilyasova to matchup with Porter would be asking too much, and on top of that, the Wizards might be getting Bradley Beal back for this game as well. While it’s somewhat at the mercy of Randy Wittman’s rotations tonight, I am still backing the Wizards and taking the points as the NBA pick.

Knicks vs. Rockets
Speaking of two teams trending in the opposite direction, the Rockets and Knicks both come off games last night to play tonight against one another in Texas. Last season the Knicks looked unfixable, while the Rockets looked like a lock to continue to be a contender in the West. However, they have completely flip-flopped this season, as the Rockets have looked like a one-hit wonder, while the Knicks look like they are well on their way back to being a playoff team in the East.

Tonight the NBA Odds have the Rockets as -4 favorite, which has been bet down from -7 with the Knicks winning a great game in Oklahoma City. I watched some of that game and the Knicks offense looks improved, while their defense is looking like a potential top 10 unit. In tonight’s game against one of the worst defenses in the NBA, the Knicks might be able to cover again.

However, I think a better wager is the total of 202. With the Rockets playing last night, Dwight Howard might not suit up tonight. Houston’s opponents both play faster and better on offense when Dwight has been off the court this season, and not so surprisingly, the Rockets’ Offensive Rating goes up about 6 percentage points when Howard doesn’t play. With the Knicks’ offense looking more and more credible with each passing game, I see the over being the play. This could easily be the highest scoring game of the evening slate.
