Rockets Sign Veteran Thabo Sefolosha

profile

Marc Stein of the New York Times reported the deal: “The Rockets are signing Thabo Sefolosha, league sources say” and per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Sefolosha’s contract is fully guaranteed:

“Thabo Sefolosha’s one-year deal with the Rockets for the veteran’s minimum is fully guaranteed, sources told ESPN. Quality defender adds depth and was trusted teammate of Russell Westbrook and James Harden in OKC. The vet forward’s deal first reported by
@TheSteinLine.”

Thabo Sefolosha has been in the league since the 2006-07 season, the 76ers selected him No. 13 overall in the 2006 NBA Draft and he was traded to the Bulls for the No. 16 pick and cash considerations. He’s been a solid perimeter defender throughout his career, he played for the Thunder from 2009 to 2014 and teamed up with James Harden and Russell Westbrook for a while.

Sefolosha was the starting shooting guard when the Thunder reached the NBA Finals in 2012 and started 367 of his 368 games with OKC. Sefolosha averaged 6.2 points and 4.1 rebounds in 26.7 minutes while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from 3-point range in 368 games with the Thunder.

The 35-year old played for the Jazz over the past two seasons and averaged 3.8 points in 12.2 minutes over 50 games (two starts) last season. Sefolosha is averaging 5.9 points and 3.8 rebounds in 22.5 minutes over 828 games (475 starts) with the Bulls, Thunder, Hawks and Jazz.

Rockets Roster & Starting Lineup

*Notates expected starter

C: Clint Capela*, Tyson Chandler, Nene
PF: P.J. Tucker*, Isaiah Hartenstein, Dyonta Davis

SG: James Harden*, Michael Frazier, William McDowell-White, Gary Clark
PG: Russell Westbrook*, Austin Rivers, Chris Chiozza, Shamorie Ponds, Chris Clemons

It was a busy offseason for the Rockets, in addition to the Westbrook trade, they also agreed to a five-year $90 million extension with Clint Capela, a four-year, $76 million maximum contract extension with Eric Gordon, re-signed Gerald Green, Austin Rivers and Nene and signed Tyson Chandler.

Considering that Sefolosha can play at either shooting guard or small forward, he could be used off the bench behind Danuel House Jr. and Gerald Green on the depth chart at small forward.
