The Minnesota Timberwolves have been waiting for this moment. They’ve added Jimmy Butler to a strong young corps, and they’re shooting up the NBA odds board for 2018.
One of these years, the Minnesota Timberwolves are going to get it right. They’ve been working on their latest rebuilding project for quite a while, and on Thursday, they may very well have added the cornerstone that will put them over the top. Minnesota made a draft-day trade with the Chicago Bulls, bringing Jimmy Butler to town, and they instantly moved from +10000 to +5000 on the championship futures market at Bovada.
Of course, nobody expects the Wolves to win the title this year, not when the Golden State Warriors still exist. But at these NBA odds, why not take a flyer on a rising commodity? Minnesota didn’t have to give up the farm to get Butler. In fact, this might be our new favorite Western Conference team here at the home office.
They Call Me Mr. Thibs!
Here are the particulars of the trade in question:
Minnesota gets: Jimmy Butler, No. 16 pick in 2017 (Justin Patton)
Chicago gets: Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn, No. 7 pick in 2017 (Lauri Markkanen)
Butler has two years plus a player option left on his contract, so this isn’t all that much to give up for the Wolves. They’ve reunited Butler with his former head coach, Tom Thibodeau, and he’ll join a starting lineup that includes (when healthy) Ricky Rubio, Andrew Wiggins, and Karl-Anthony Towns. Yowza.

And they might not be done yet. Minnesota can add more talent to this picture after clearing cap room; injured center Nikola Pekovic has already been waived, and they’ve got four impending free agents they can cast aside, including defensively challenged Shabazz Muhammad (–4.3 DBPM last year). With that kind of upside, we’re happy to put the Wolves in our offseason NBA picks, if only for a small sum.
