Another nice-sized slate of basketball games awaits us on Saturday night, and we're hopeful we can beat the books with this pair of NBA picks.

Houston Rockets vs. Dallas Mavericks
In-state rivals, the Rockets and Mavericks, will do battle in Houston this evening, and at the moment the NBA Odds are favoring the Rockets, who are laying five points.

Neither team, despite having talented rosters, have performed all that well to start the season, but we have to understand that Houston and Dallas have been extra cautious with some of their better players who are dealing with recovery from injuries. For the Rockets, Dwight Howard has been sitting out at least once in back-to-back sets, while Dallas has been careful with Chandler Parsons, Wesley Matthews and Deron Williams early on.

The Mavericks are generally getting healthier and healthier each day, but they have managed to win two games in a row leading into tonight, both of which came over LA teams. They beat the Clippers by ten at home and then were able to outlast the Lakers 90-82 last night.

Is a third consecutive W in the cards this evening? Houston has lost two straight, falling at home to Brooklyn and on the road in Denver yesterday, but now returns home for a chance to end the week on a high note.

This will be the second game in as many nights for both of these teams, so there's no inherent edge there. And, even though the Rockets will be without Howard, they've proven they can win games with that smaller lineup (with Marcus Thornton), and the home-court advantage will be beneficial to the cause. It doesn't hurt to have the best player on the court in Harden, who figures to have a big game.

We'll be rolling with Houston to win and cover the number on their own floor.

NBA Pick: Houston Rockets -5 at 5Dimes.

San Antonio Spurs vs. Philadelphia 76ers
To wrap up our NBA Picks of the day, we have one of the best teams in the NBA up against one of the worst.

The Spurs will be playing host to the 76ers, and the odds would suggest we'll see a blowout win for the home team. San Antonio has gotten off to a 6-2 this season, losing to only Oklahoma City and Washington, both defeats coming out on the road. The Spurs have only played two home games thus far and have had little trouble, as they crushed the Nets by 27 and outmatched Charlotte 114-94.

It's hard to envision a different scenario playing out in the team's third home game, considering San Antonio comes up against a Philadelphia team that's still yet to win this season. However, despite the winless ways, the 76ers have been battling hard, and they did at least stay competitive with both Cleveland and Milwaukee on the road.

Nerlens Noel returned to action in last night's loss to Oklahoma City and promptly put up another good game, but rookie Jahlil Okafor suffered through his worst performance so far, as he was held in check by Serge Ibaka and company down low. Following the loss, Philadelphia is now averaging 92.0 points per game (29th in the NBA) while surrendering 106.0 points (25th) a contest. The growing pains are going to continue for this young 76ers team, but there have been signs of what's to come, especially with that frontcourt of Noel and Okafor.

Believe it or not, we like Philadelphia to cover this number, as much as it worries us to back a winless squad. You know you're going to at least get a competitive effort from the 76ers; this pick is dependent on Noel's status, however, as we like the underdogs' chances of a cover much more of he's on the court again tonight.

NBA Pick: Philadelphia 76ers +16.5 at Pinnacle
