Game #1 of the 2016 NBA Finals begins Thursday. This is a well-publicized rematch of last year’s NBA Playoffs which saw Golden State emerge as the 2015 NBA Champion.

Cleveland at Golden State (-6) 9:00 PM ET ABC
To get here, it took Cleveland only 14 games. They swept Detroit and Atlanta before being extended to 6 games against Toronto when the Raptors won 2 games on their home court. The road for the defending Champions was far more difficult. They defeated Houston and Portland 4 games to 1 and before being extended to 7 games by OKC. Trailing the series 3 games to 1, Golden State won the last 3 games of the series by margins of 9, 7 and 8 points in a 5 day span from last Thursday to this Monday.

Cleveland Cavaliers
Considering the circumstances described above, it is an easy leap to favor the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game #1. They have had 6 days to rest and prepare for this revenge Finals opportunity. Remember, that unlike last year when Cleveland played without their #2 and 3 scorers in Love and Irving, the Cavs are at full strength for this revenge rematch.

But if they couldn’t get it done in either regular season matchup this year in which they lost by 6 on this court and 34 in Cleveland, what guarantee is there that they make the statement tonight. Furthermore, Cleveland backers will make the “letdown case” for Golden State on the basis of the Warriors hard fought 3 wins in 5 daysto win the previous series. All of that could well play out to the advantage of Cleveland tonight. In the opinion of this bureau, however, there is a greater probability that Golden State will prevail by a double digit margin in Game #1.

Golden State Warriors
As we enter the 2016 Finals, I note that it has been a group of games dominated by home favorites. In fact, any team who is favored on their home court in the 2016 NBA Playoffs to date is 35-18 ATS. Incidentally, for those keeping score, there have been 49 UNDERS and only 29 OVERS. We will follow the “home favorite” line of thinking in what should be one of the more entertaining NBA Final Series in recent times. Each team thrives in transition and is capable of having huge games from behind the arc.

In the end, however, I must note the historical significance that points to any NBA Playoff Game #1 home team in this price range who has a won/loss percentage of .650 or higher, has an overall winning percentage that exceeds that of their opponent by .070 and who defeated their road opponent in the last meeting of the regular season. This situation has provided over 65% winners on well over 100 opportunities in the last 25 years. I invite you to join me by putting the NBA odds in your favor with my NBA pick on the Golden State Warriors in Game #1 tonight.
