The Portland Trail Blazers are at a crossroads of sorts. They have two of the top 25 players in the NBA and a solid cast of roll players behind them. If Portland was a city east of the Mississippi River and in the Eastern Conference, they would be one of the top four teams in the conference. However, they aren’t, and that means the potential outcomes of their season are slightly volatile in a stacked West.

ATS Outlook

In the regular season alone (Blazers got swept and were 0-4 ATS in the playoffs last season) the Blazers were one of the better teams in the league ATS. That being said, they are one of the better home court advantages in the NBA, which makes them a prime late-night wager on certain nights.

Portland was 23-17-3 ATS when playing at home last season, and naturally as a small-market team, they went undervalued ATS against big teams coming to town. This helped them to a 5-1 ATS record as home underdogs.

The Blazers’ odds to win the division, or even just make the playoffs are severely undervalued right now. This team finished third in the West last year, and the only big change from that year to this one is LeBron James. So, what if the Lakers make the playoffs? Right now, the odds from Bovada for Portland to make the playoffs is one of the best futures on their site right now.

That being said, I don’t really condone betting futures, so with Portland the best chance to make money off them this season will likely continue to be betting them at home. Since 2016, the Blazers are 45-38-3 ATS at home and 10-7 ATS as a home dog in that stretch.

How Can They Dethrone The Warriors?

Without sounding repetitive from the other team previews, the Blazers’ chances of dethroning the Warriors are slim. That being said they were 3-0 ATS against the Dubs last season, including beating them twice at home straight up as +12.5 and +15.5 underdogs. This is where there will be money made on Portland and Golden State next season.

Even in a potential playoff matchup, I suspect the Blazers will be undervalued against basically anyone. They had a bad matchup against the Pelicans last season, but against a smaller team the Blazers present some really bad matchup issues.

However, at +15000 to win it all this season, the Blazers have very little futures value outside of their playoff odds, or maybe their divisional odds if they can best the Thunder and Jazz. The Blazers are at worst the 7th or 8th seed in the West.

We often think about the impact of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum on the Blazers, but if Jusuf Nurkic can continue to grow and get better, this team has a lot more potential than the odds makers are giving them credit for.
