Both the Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers have played two different tempos than we saw last season. Today they are on the road taking on Philadelphia and Memphis respectively. Will their current trends continue?

Utah at Philadelphia total 212

It still looks surprising to me whenever I see a total over 210 and this Utah team involved in that matchup. Although oddsmakers have come out with another large total for this team for my NBA pick I’m going to back over the total. Utah has shown the ability to get up and down the floor this season averaging well over 100 points over the past five games. Today they get the chance to take on a Philadelphia team that is not shy in pushing the pace averaging 87.9 attempts per game, and allowing 89 attempts per game ranking them fifth and 23rd in the NBA respectively.  Although Utah still does not average many attempts they’ve been shooting well from beyond the arc averaging almost 30 attempts from distance per game, and knocking down almost 11 of those ranking them 14th and 13th in the league respectively. On top of that is the fact that Utah has not been in their normal lockdown mode defensively and they currently rank 28th in the league allowing opponents to shoot 39% from distance. Putting all this together I like for the tempo to be pretty quick and for both teams to score.

Portland at Memphis total 194

The difference this year with Portland has been a steady stream of good defensive play. These two teams actually met up just two weeks ago finishing with a 98-97 final, yet oddsmakers have come out with a lower total than that today. Despite this low total for my NBA pick I’m going to back under the total when these two meet up in Memphis. On the season both teams have been solid on the defensive end with Portland allowing opponents to shoot just 43.1%, and Memphis allowing just 43.7% ranking these teams third and sixth in the NBA respectively. They also have been really good in not allowing a lot of pace and simply not allowing opponents to put many balls in the bucket with Memphis allowing just 35.7 field goals made per game, and Portland 35.9, ranking them third and fourth in the NBA respectively. With the number set by odds he makers I believe it gives us a good sign as to the most likely outcome of the pace and emphasis on defense that this game will hold.
