The Detroit Pistons absolutely choked at home versus the Toronto Raptors in a game they had to win. Today they travel to take on Houston, a team that is locked up the third slot in the Western Conference. Can Detroit make the game somewhat interesting?

Detroit Pistons

As of writing this article Detroit would need a miracle to get into the playoffs but there is no reason for me to think that they will take the night off. This has been a disappointing season for Detroit and although I am hard-pressed to see them pulling out any type of upset I do think they can stay within double digits. Statistically speaking they are not a very efficient team but they do shoot 45% from the floor and they rank seventh in the NBA in field goals made per game averaging 39.7 per contest. Playing against a Houston team that likes to go up-tempo should be no problem for Detroit as they also average 88.3 attempts for game which ranks third in the league. Defensively they will struggle on the road but their numbers are not horrible ranking in the middle the league in most categories highlighted by allowing opponents just 38.3 field goals made per game which ranks them 10th in the NBA. As mentioned, I don’t expect them to win this game in any way shape or form, but I do expect them to at least be a little bit competitive.

Houston Rockets

With the third seed locked up I’m just not sure Houston will put up the kind of numbers to blowout Detroit so I think there is value in fading them tonight. Although it is never easy to go against Houston at home their defensive numbers make me believe that Detroit will be able to put up enough points to stay within this big number. On that side of the ball Houston has been less than stellar allowing opponents to shoot 52.1% on their two-point shots and 46.2% overall ranking them 28th and 23rd in the NBA respectively. They also rank 26th and 27th in opponent field goals attempted and made per game. Offensively they rank among the top three teams in the league and they should definitely get their points tonight, but because of their poor defense I expect Detroit to be able to put up their share as well. Expect an up-tempo game with Houston winning but not quite covering the spread.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers have come out making Houston a -12.5 favorite but for my NBA pick I will take Detroit to cover. Houston is one of the worst offensive teams in the league and although they have the capability of blowing out Detroit I just don’t think they do that tonight.
