For Wednesday’s NBA totals we’re going to take a look at some conference matchups when Detroit travels to Brooklyn, and New Orleans takes on Memphis. Although there have been a lot of high totals this season set by oddsmakers these two particular games are set under 210. Will both games be up-tempo, or will we see lower scoring affairs?

Detroit at Brooklyn

These two teams have not met up this season and I’m a little bit surprised at the low total set by oddsmakers, but for my NBA pick in this matchup I will back under the total. Under head coach Kenny Atkinson Brooklyn has been a very up-tempo team averaging 87.2 attempts per game which ranks third in the NBA and on the other side of the ball allowing 89.4 which ranks them 27th. However, with the way these two teams matchup I have a difficult time believing they’re going to reach even 200 points. Despite Brooklyn pushing a lot of tempo, they have been great in limiting attempts allowing just 82.8 per game which ranks them eighth in the NBA. Neither team has been particularly efficient shooting the ball with Brooklyn shooting just 43.8%, and Detroit 44.7% ranking them 30th and 25th in the NBA respectively. Ultimately though these teams do play a little bit of defense with Detroit allowing 38.6 field goals made per game, ranking 13th, and Brooklyn ranking sixth in opponent shooting efficiency. Oddsmakers have set this low total for reason.

Two different styles will meet in this matchup and oddsmakers have set the total at 209 which seems just about right. For my NBA pick in this game, I will take over the total as Memphis has shown a propensity to get up and down the floor a little bit more over the past couple of weeks. On the season the Grizzlies are allowing just 79.8 attempts by their opponents per game which ranks first in the NBA. New Orleans, by contrast, is allowing 89.6 attempts for the game which ranks them 28th in the league. Offensively on the season, Memphis has not been very good ranking dead last in the NBA averaging just 35.9 field goals made per game. New Orleans, however, has been extremely efficient shooting 49% from the floor and averaging 41.5 field goals made per game both ranking second in the NBA. It seems to me we know the points will come from New Orleans, but don’t sleep on Memphis to score as well. Over the past couple weeks in their last seven games, Memphis has been averaging well over 100 points per game and I expect them to keep up with New Orleans tonight.
