Both the Dallas Mavericks and the Oklahoma City Thunder are on the second leg of a back to back tonight when they meet in Oklahoma City. With The Thunder as a solid favorite across-the-board. Can the slow tempo Mavericks stay within the number?

Dallas Mavericks

Dallas has definitely struggled this season but over the last 10 games they are playing a bit better overall. The main issue I believe is that they are not very deep but they do have some decent veteran talent that should keep them competitive in this matchup with both teams playing their second game in two nights. On the season the offense has not been clicking as Dallas ranks last in the NBA averaging just 96.6 point for game and only 35.8 field goals made per game. However, they do shoot decent from beyond the arc at almost 36% hitting 10.8 three-pointers per game which ranks them sixth in the NBA.

Defensively their statistics are poor across the board but because of their tempo they’ve limited teams to just 100 points per game which ranks them fourth in the NBA. They also rank first and third in opponents field goals attempted and made per game which should help them tonight against the up-tempo Thunder. Although it is highly doubtful they pull off any type of upset I do believe they can keep this game competitive and stay within the number because of the situation.

 Oklahoma City Thunder

In this following paragraph I could simply write the name Russell Westbrook over and over again  because he has been tremendous this season carrying Oklahoma City on his back. Without Kevin Durant though OKC has really struggled on the offensive side of the ball, as far as their statistics go they rank in the middle of the league in most categories. One glaring issue is the fact that they should just 32.4% from beyond the arc which ranks them second to last in the NBA.

Defensively they have not been very good either allowing opponents to shoot 45.5% overall which ranks them 16th in the NBA while allowing opponents an average of 39.3 field goals made per game which ranks them 20th. Despite Westbrook’s efforts OKC most likely will end up in the middle of the pack by the end of the season and tonight, although they win, don’t look for them to blow out Dallas.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers of come out making OKC a -7 favorite across-the-board but for my NBA pick, I will take the Dallas Mavericks. This is a situation play for me in which both teams on the second leg of a back to back so look for the good veteran core of the Mavericks to keep this game relatively close.
