A glance at the NBA standings is most revealing. The NY Knicks continue to plummet in the Eastern Conference.  Their 5-21 SU mark is better than only lowly Philly in all of the NBA.  The Dallas Mavericks play in the rugged Western Conference.  At 17-8 SU, their record is good for only 7thplace in the West. Will these numbers reflect tonights game?

A glance at the NBA standings is most revealing. The NY Knicks continue to plummet in the Eastern Conference.  Their 5-21 SU mark is better than only lowly Philly in all of the NBA.  The Dallas Mavericks play in the rugged Western Conference.  At 17-8 SU, their record is good for only 7th place in the West.  Consider their record would give them the 4th seed in the East.  A microcosm of that difference is the fact that when West meets East, they are 89-49 SU.  NY is just 1-8 SU vs. Western teams, Dallas is 10-2 SU vs. Eastern teams.  Another interesting side light to this game is the respective roles of these teams.  Dallas has long been one of the best road teams in the NBA.  This year, they are again solid as traveler with a mark of 7-4 ATS away to -9 in NBA odds.  For NY, the bottom has fallen out in MSG, where they stand 3-10 SU, 4-9 ATS against the number.

You did not have to be much of an analyst to figure out that the NY Knicks team was set up for failure this season.  The offense was trying to fit the proverbial square peg into the round hole.  As great a HC as was Phil Jackson, this year’s components were challenging, even for his talents. Jackson set himself up with 1st HC Fisher, trying to use the team concept of the triangle offense with a group of NY players in the classic one-on-one NBA mold.  That includes star and leading scorer, Carmelo Anthony, whose talents clearly do not fit with this offense.  Only Philly and Detroit are scoring less than the Knicks 93.9 PPG.

Dallas knows that there are no nights off, if they wish to maintain or ascend in the Western Conference.  Coming off a 105-98 home loss to Western Conference leader, Golden State showed Dallas just how far they needed to go.  With 3 full days rest, it means they bring full focus into tonight’s encounter.  They will not be over confident knowing they allowed the Knicks to hang around before beating them 109-102 in OT in Dallas on November 26th.  The Mavs have a far superior offense to that of NY, averaging 110 PPG, the highest in the NBA.

With the Mavs off a loss, an inverted home/road dichotomy in their favor and a pair of offenses at the opposite end of the spectrum, it will be no surprise to this bureau when the Mavs emerge with a comfortable double digit victory tonight.
