Both the Mercury and Liberty are playing awesome basketball right now, so tonight's game should be a good one. Let's see what kind of WNBA odds are there for the taking.
Even though the Liberty have looked a lot more dangerous lately, they're still not being given much of a chance against Brittney Griner and the Mercury. Just how bad is the damage? Phoenix is favored by 7.5 points at all of the top sportsbooks, meaning we're likely to see this winning streak survive another game.
If you're itching to make a play on this game's total instead, that number can be found at 147.5 points. Both teams have been solid defensively, which would help explain this relatively low O/U.
Watch out for the Mercury. The return of Griner has immediately transformed Phoenix into a contender, with the team having rolled out a six-game winning streak ahead of this weekend's battle with New York. The Mercury have leaped into second place in the Western Conference with a 9-5 overall record.
Four days ago Phoenix kept momentum high with a 80-71 road win over Atlanta. Griner and Candice Dupree both scored 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds, with the former adding four blocks for good measure. DeWanna Bonner did a little of everything, compiling 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists, along with a steal and a block too. Phoenix shot a tidy 45.6 percent from the floor in all and outscored the Dream in a major way (44-20) in the paint.
With Briner protecting the rim on one end of the court and then scoring at will on the other, the Mercury have quickly become a force to be reckoned with. Will they be able to win their seventh straight game tonight in front of their own fans?
New York Liberty
Let's not overlook the Liberty, who have won five of their last six games, making them another one of the hottest teams in the WNBA. They'll be riding high after a 64-57 road win over Connecticut two nights ago, a game in which New York really won through grit and determination, especially on the defensive end.
For the Liberty, Tina Charles enforced her will throughout. She ended up with 22 points, 12 rebounds and a block, while shooting 7-of-13 from the floor. She pretty much carried New York on her back en route to the victory, a win which improved the Liberty to 9-5 on the season. That's good for the top record in the Eastern Conference.
Thanks to Charles' play throughout the season, New York has been able to outmuscle teams, and that's backed up by the stats. As a team the Liberty are top dogs in terms of rebounding, and they're ranked third in scoring defense. The ultimate test is on the docket tonight, however, as Griner and company get ready to welcome the Liberty to Phoenix.
Sometimes a line is telling. You would think this line would be tighter considering how well the Liberty have been playing, but clearly the Mercury are on a roll themselves. They'll also have home-court advantage, and as a result oddsmakers are really digging their chances of keeping the winning streak going.
But will Phoenix be able to cover this large numberset on the WNBA odds board? Thing is, the Mercury are one of the few teams in the WNBA that have the necessary firepower to pull away from teams, and it hasn't really mattered the competition as of late either. New York may be able to hang around for a little while, with Charles leading the way, but we don't expect that kind of competitive effort for the entire game.
With that said, we'll be siding with Phoenix to not only win but win pretty big at home. We're expecting the Mercury to continue their stellar play.
