New Orleans Pelicans vs. Los Angeles Clippers
Saturday, August 01, 2020 – 06:00 PM EDT at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida
New Orleans Pelicans
The upstart Pelicans fell to the Utah Jazz in their re-opening by just two points as Rudy Gobert took advantage of his massive size in the final seconds of the game. Brandon Ingram missed the potential game-tying shot as time ran out, but the team lost the game after they were outscored 58-44 in the second-half.
This will likely be the story of the restart for the young Pels. They're fun and possess solid young talent but are bad on defense, committing fouls, drawing fouls, and are average on the defensive boards. Those are signs of an immature and growing team, and they're facing much better teams.
Ingram and Lonzo Ball need to find their efficiency quickly to be more competitive. As well as Zion Williamson and Jrue Holiday played, as they combined for 15-for-26 and 33 points, the former made only nine of 33 shots. Their lack of consistent scoring from a backcourt player can be exposed against the Clippers.
The Clippers fell to the Lakers on opening night but it was expected since they were missing Lou Williams and several other contributors. Sure, it took a LeBron James putback for the Lakers to win, but the Clippers failed to find a good rhythm after getting hammered early on. But they're good enough to win the Finals once fully rostered.
They rank as a terrific defense, boasting top-three marks in field goal percentage allowed and 3-point percentage allowed, and eighth in free throw rate. Their offense is fifth overall, and top-10 in 3-point percentage, free throw percentage, and rebounding. This team is extremely well-rounded.
For this free NBA pick, we're going with the Clippers -4.5 at -110 with Bovada. This matchup is about limiting Ingram while either Leonard or George have another big game. It's not hard to foresee them winning comfortably either. I'll take the favorites.
