The Pelicans got a big win last night against the short-handed Wizards, and now they travel into Chicago to Anthony Davis’ homecoming for 2015. The NBA odds have the Bulls as -6½ favorites with a total of 203½.

Chicago’s Strange Season
I think most people following the Bulls thought that the start to the season might be up and down with a new coach, and while it’s still early in the season, the Bulls are one of the most inconsistent teams in all of the NBA. Tonight against the Pelicans with the star power of Anthony Davis and Tyreke Evans coming into town, the Bulls should have little trouble getting up for this game. However, Chicago is only 3-8 ATS this season when playing at home, and while I don’t really trust the Pelicans either, the spread is a side I’m laying off on this Saturday night.

The total, though, presents some interesting scenarios. For instance, since it opened up after the Pelicans finished their game last night, the total has shrunk from 205 to 203½, indicating some strong money has come in on the under. If that is truly the case, I want to follow the money trail, so to speak. It makes sense, too.

On the season, the Pelicans are 5-0-1 cashing the under on the second night of a back to back, and after a hard fought game last night, and with the season well underway, the Pelicans’ might suffer on offense tonight. The Bulls are ranked in the top three in the NBA in Defensive Rating this season at 99.1, and while the Pelicans play at a fast pace and give up a ton of points, the Bulls offense has underwhelmed at times this season.

The Sharp Pick
So far this season, the Pelicans are 9-2 cashing the under when playing on the road this season, and the Bulls have the same record cashing the under when playing at home. On the year, the Bulls have been fantastic playing defense against Western Conference teams, giving up less than 95 points per game, and scoring not too many more than that. With the Pelicans tired, the pace might slow down tonight with the Bulls at home, who do sometimes slow down a little when playing at home. Chicago is ranked 27th in the NBA in home scoring this season at 95.9, and with how bad of a rebounding team they have been to start the season, I don’t expect too many second chance points against Davis tonight.

On top of that, the Pelicans have not been good at scoring the ball against the East this season. In their eight games versus the so-called ‘weaker’ conference, the Pelicans have only scored an average of 98.6 points per game. If the Bulls slow down the pace enough and wear the Pelicans down, the score shouldn’t exceed the mid to upper 90s tonight. I don’t think either one of these teams score more than 96 points in this spot, so add the under to your NBA picks for Saturday evening.
