The NBA season is just getting started. You might see some weird results happen. Take for instance the Knicks beating the Cavaliers in Cleveland. Where can you find good bets?

Dallas Mavericks @ New Orleans Pelicans

Odds: Mavericks -1

This is a game the Pelicans will get up for, and the NBA odds are predicting a close one. New Orleans started its season against the Orlando Magic, which really didn’t give the Pelicans or anyone on the outside a truly good barometer of how much New Orleans has truly progressed. This game against the Dallas Mavericks will provide basketball experts with a clearer picture of the Pelicans this early in the season. Everyone in the NBA is captured by the presence of Anthony Davis, the big man for New Orleans who looks like the league’s next superstar in the making. Davis is the player who is going to get the Pelicans to the playoffs if this team does manage to get there. He might be able to do well because Dallas big man Tyson Chandler has recurring back issues that are once again bothering him. The problem for the Pelicans in this game will be the Mavericks’ guards and wings. New Orleans’ defense was not that strong last season, and the Pelicans will have to extend pressure against the kinds of players on Dallas’ roster. Early in the season, the smarter bet is to go with the veteran team that has more proven players.

Pick: Dallas -1 at 5Dimes

Toronto Raptors @ Orlando Magic

Odds: Toronto -6.5

The Raptors won their first game of the season over the Atlanta Hawks, but that’s not the reason they’re favored here, especially by over six points on the road. The Raptors are favored by this many points because Orlando is in such deep trouble. The Magic have already lost two games this season, and they’ve been outscored by an average of 12 points per game, 103-91. Orlando is a team that is just not in position to do much of anything. The Magic didn’t have many really good players to begin with, and just before the season, wing Victor Oladipo, one of the better and more encouragingly talented players on the squad, suffered an injury (to his face). With Oladipo out, the Magic lose a lot of their defensive ability on the perimeter and a guy who could attack the basket. This Orlando team is just not ready to beat a good team such as Toronto. The Raptors are getting the Magic at the right time.

Pick: Toronto -6.5 at The Greek

Phoenix Suns @ Utah Jazz

Odds: Phoenix -2

The Phoenix Suns might be a young team that’s trying to adjust to the new season and a lot of expectations, but the Suns aren’t likely to stumble in this particular game. The Utah Jazz are starting over with a new coach, Quin Snyder, and will certainly need a lot of time to play the way they want to. The Jazz are going to need a few months before they really begin to function cohesively as a team. So far this season, we’ve seen the Jazz get rocked at home by the Houston Rockets and get smoked on the road in Dallas. They’ve shown no signs of being able to compete with the better teams in the West and that’s what they have to face here. The Suns are athletic at just about every position, and they’re going to have too much talent for the Jazz to handle. Take the Suns with your NBA picks.

Pick: Phoenix -2 at Bodog
