As the NBA season starts to pick up steam we’re going to take a look at two games focusing on the totals today when Minnesota travels to take on Miami and Toronto travels to Portland. Both games have been set with high totals but will both of them go over?

Minnesota at Miami Total 216.5

The last two times these two teams have met up we saw two pretty high scoring affairs with last season both games going over this current total set by oddsmakers. So far this season neither team has gotten to where they should be on the defensive end as Miami is allowing opponents to shoot 47.3% from the field, and Minnesota allowing 51.7% ranking them 25th and 30th in the NBA respectively. These numbers are quite a bit off from what we saw from these teams last year but even under a defensive minded coach in Tom Thibodeau Minnesota has not been great defensively while he has been at the helm.  Along with the poor opponent scoring percentage, neither team has been very good across the board in most offensive categories.  However, when we start to break this game down I think the 216.5 is just a little bit too much as I don’t expect the tempo to be too quick with Miami ranking 15th and Minnesota ranking 21st in field goals attempted per game. For these teams to get over this total they would have to shoot at an extremely high percentage but with the matchups, I think we’re going to see a little bit more of the defenses step up. Expect both these teams to score but to stay just under this high total.

Toronto at Portland Total 215.5

At first glance this total almost seems a little bit too high but for my NBA pick I expect for these teams to score at a high clip. Dwayne Casey for Toronto and Terry Stotts for Portland since last season have been pushing the tempo for both of these talented teams, especially considering their strong guard play. Currently Toronto is averaging 87.8 attempts per game while Portland is averaging 88.8 ranking these teams 11th and fourth in the NBA in those categories respectively. The reason why think this total looks a little bit too high on paper is that both teams have actually played some solid defense with both teams allowing around 100 points per game defensively. However, offensively I think there is too many weapons on both sides for us to see either of these teams get a lot of defensive stops. Portland has yet to really get out and take advantage of some transition points ranking second to last in the NBA in fast-break buckets per game, but they could find themselves getting into an up-and-down affair considering Toronto has been allowing teams to score in transition at a pretty high clip ranking third to last in that category defensively.  The tempo will definitely be there and I expect for the shots to drop as well so look for this game to probably get over 220.
