For Wednesdays NBA slate we have two solid matchups when old rivals collide in Boston and the new look Minnesota Timberwolves visit Golden State. We’re going to take a close look at the totals in this game as I believe will see a defensive battle in one and high flying affair in the other.

Los Angeles Lakers vs Boston

Head coach Luke Walton has Los Angeles looking much better this season and a currently sit at .500 winning three of their last four games. Things will probably get a little bit difficult for them tonight is they take on a Boston Celtics team that has been one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. Surprisingly the Lakers have been decent defending the ball as well so for my NBA pick I’m going to back under the total. What gives me a little bit of pause in backing the under is that Los Angeles is really pushing tempo averaging 87.6 attempts per game while allowing 90.7 which ranks them fifth and 28th in the NBA respectively. Outside of that statistic though both of these teams have stepped up defensively this year with Boston ranking first and Los Angeles ranking eighth in opponent shooting efficiency. On top of that both teams have been defending from beyond the arc very well with Los Angeles and Boston allowing opponents to shoot just 32.6% from distance tying them for fifth in the NBA. With the Celtics being at home I expect for them though to control tempo and they really have been going at a controlled pace.  Don’t look for this game to get up and down the floor like Los Angeles would really like.

 Minnesota vs Golden State

In Golden State’s last matchup with Miami they really had a sluggish game but look for that to completely turn around in this matchup. Although this number is extremely high for my NBA pick I’m going to back over this total. What is interesting about this line is the fact that Minnesota and Golden State have actually only gone over this particular total twice in their last 10 matchups which really gets my radar up for this contest. Statistically speaking both teams have been very good on the offensive end with Minnesota shooting 47.3% from the floor and 38.3% from distance ranking them fourth and eighth in the NBA respectively, while Golden State of course ranks number one in most categories. The tempo should be quite fast as Golden State has allowed opponents to really get up and down the floor allowing 90.5 attempts per game. As well, Minnesota hasn’t been shy with allowing opponents to go ahead and run with them as well with opponents getting up 87.4 attempts for game good for 20th in the NBA. Statistically neither team has been really in any kind of lockdown mode defensively, especially Minnesota ranking dead last in the NBA with opponents shooting 49.5% against them.
