The Thunder and the Mavericks have split the two times they met this year each winning their games at home. Today oddsmakers have made Dallas a small underdog even though they are at home and OKC is on the second leg of a back to back. Who wins this Western Conference matchup?

OKC Thunder

With Oklahoma City running up and down the floor versus Houston yesterday I was a bit surprised that they would come out as any type of favorite considering Dallas has played better basketball this second half of the season. For me, this makes this a play to back the odds makers and I like for Russell Westbrook and OKC to come in and pull off the win. Even without Kevin Durant OKC has played some really solid basketball this year pushing the tempo and being efficient from the interior extended.

Currently, they rank 10th  in both field goals made per game and shooting 50.7% on their two-point shots. They also should be able to win the battle in the paint as they rank first in the league in points in the paint and total rebounds per game. On the defensive side, they have been less than stellar but they still rank 10th in opponent shooting efficiency and Dallas has struggled this year across the board to put the ball the basket. If OKC can get to the tempo that they like, and I think they will, they should win this game by more than five.

Dallas Mavericks

I had Dallas the other night versus Toronto and was a bit surprised at how poorly they played but it seems to me for them the writing is on the wall and they are just trying to finish out the season on a high note. Although they have played better recently, which is why I wanted to back them the other night, their statistics across the board are still extremely poor and they rank dead last in field goals made per game along with ranking 28th shooting 44.1% from the field.

For me, the most surprising thing about Dallas is their defensive statistics as they rank in the bottom five the league in most categories highlighted by allowing opponents to shoot 46.9% from the floor which ranks them 27th. All due respect to Rick Carlisle and this group of veterans they don’t really match up very well with OKC. Even with the Thunder on the second leg of a back to back, I think the right play is to fade Dallas.

Oklahoma City Thunder vs Dallas Mavericks

Oddsmakers have made OKC a -1 favorite in this spot and for my NBA pick, I will back them to win this game by more than five. These are two teams going in different directions and although the spot is not ideal for OKC I like how they matchup with Dallas and look for them to pull off a solid victory.
