Happy 2013 everyone! We have made a slight profit in the first third of the NBA season, which means we still have plenty of time left to grow those profits and make out with a nice bankroll.

NBA Picks of the day

Season Record: 43-37-3

We have plenty of action on tap for the NBA today, so let’s take a look at some of them and decide where our 2013 value lies.

Mavs vs. Wizards

Our early game on New Year’s Day is the Mavericks heading into DC to tip it off with the Wizards. The Mavs have been slipping recently, even though they just got back Dirk Nowitzki, while the Wizards are in an eternal slump, but they too will be getting their super star back from knee surgery very soon as well.

NBA Odds for this game favor the road Mavs by -3 ½, and while Dallas hasn’t been great this season ATS, the Wizards are nothing to get excited about either. So, with both teams not playing up to their best, who should we back tonight with part of our NBA Picks?

At 4-24 SU on the season, it must be really hard to be Randy Wittman. He took over in a crappy situation last season when Flip Saunders basically was trying to get fired, and he hasn’t had a healthy team basically his whole time as head coach.

However, the mark of a good coach is how he gets his team to respond, whether it’s to a big winning streak, or in the Wizards’ case, a massive losing streak. Wittman has continued to get his team to play hard and competitively this whole first third of the season.

Getting John Wall and Trevor Ariza back will only help. Until then, the Wizards will have to get along with defense, and use their determination on the other end of the floor to beat teams. Washington is a pretty solid defensive squad, but the problem is that they are the worst team in the NBA when it comes to scoring the ball, averaging only 88 points per game right now without Wall.

While the Wizards are still waiting on their health, the Mavs have just gotten theirs. Nowitzki has come back and is getting back into form for the Mavs, but with three months off, Dirk won’t be his old self for a few more weeks.

For tonight’s game, I have to side with the Mavs. Washington can’t score the ball to save their lives, and even though the Mavs’ defense is horrible, I think the books are undervaluing the Mavs by a few points.

My Pick: Mavs -3 ½ at 5Dimes

Blazers vs. Knicks

A banged up Knicks team welcomes in the Blazers to Madison Square Garden tonight. Even with all their injury concerns, the Knicks are -9 favorites tonight in the NBA Odds.

New York has Carmelo Anthony and Raymond Felton either out or questionable for tonight’s game, while Tyson Chandler is also banged up along with Rasheed Wallace and the likes of Iman Shumpert. However, the Knicks will get a boost tonight, as Amare Stoudemire is expected to make his season debut tonight.

Stoudemire has missed the whole season up to this point, and with all the banged up Knicks, he might be called on to play more than the Knicks would want normally.

However, the Blazers taking nine points is too many for the likes of this banged up Knicks team. With the possibility of no Anthony tonight, along with no Felton and a banged up Chandler, I don’t even care if Amare comes back and scores 20 points. The Blazer should have enough to cover with all the Knicks’ injuries.

Wes Matthews is set to make his return tonight for the Blazers tonight after missing the last several games with a hip injury, and his three point shooting and defense will be a huge boost for Portland.
