The New Orleans Pelicans won 48 games last season and they have been given a season win total of 45.5 from Bovada sportsbook in the preseason.

  • 2017-18 Record: 48-34
  • 2017-18 ATS Record: 52-38-1
  • (Bovada) 2018-19 Season Win Total: (45.5)
  • (Bovada) Odds To Make Playoffs: (-190)
  • (BetOnline) Odds To Win Division: (+800)
  • (BetOnline) Odds To Win Western Conference: (+6600)
  • (BetOnline) Odds To Win NBA Championship: (+10000)

The Pelicans may have lost DeMarcus Cousins, but they gained Julius Randle this offseason. Along with Nikola Mirotic and Anthony Davis, this frontcourt is one of the more formidable front courts in the entire NBA. With Jrue Holiday and some strong wing players, this team could go a lot farther than the 45.5 win total suggests.

ATS Outlook

The Pelicans had one hell of a season ATS in several different aspects. They were dominant against bad teams going 13-2 ATS as a road favorite, and they were 30-16 ATS on the road in general. Combined with a 7-2 ATS record in the playoffs, and this team made bettors a lot of money.

Small markets tend to overperform ATS, and the Pelicans are one of those small markets with a good team. This can be deadly to the books ATS, especially when they are playing bigger named teams.

With the rest of the public attention on other teams in the West like the Lakers, Rockets, Thunder, and Warriors, teams like the Pelicans are going to be undervalued almost every night. I Davis can stay healthy and have an MVP-like season, the Pelicans will destroy their season win total and be close to 50 wins this season.

How Can They Dethrone the Warriors?

After sweeping the Blazers in the first round, the Pelicans went 3-2 ATS against the Warriors in their five playoff games against them in the second round. The year they got swept by the Dubs in the first round before Alvin Gentry was hired, they played the Dubs well ATS then too.

With Davis, Randle, and Mirotic up front, the Pelicans can create some serious matchup issues for the Warriors in the front court right now. That could change if Cousins can come back strong after the All Star Break, but for now this Pelicans team will be dangerous in a playoff setting.

Right now, they are one big time player away from competing to make the Western Conference Finals, but a trip to the second round is not out of the question for this Pelicans team.

The issue is they play in a division with the Rockets ad Spurs, so their future odds value is somewhat capped. However, I do think New Orleans is the second best team in the division now, and that could play into them being undervalued ATS early in the season.

Official Pick: OVER 45.5 Wins (-120)
